Libya: David Cameron's rude awakening as rallying cry falls on deaf ears

The British prime minister was the first world leader to propose the establishment of a no-fly zone to protect the rebels, and has been at the forefront of diplomatic efforts to halt the Gaddafi regime's brutal repression of its people.

He has even succeeded in joining forces with French President Nicolas Sarkozy to pressure EU leaders to impose a no-fly zone which, given France's historic tendency to do the opposite of anything Britain wants, must be something of a first. ....

But despite the considerable effort the Anglo-French initiative has invested in trying to rally international support for a robust stand against Gaddafi's brutality, the British and French leaders now find themselves stymied by the intransigence of their EU partners. ....

Mr Cameron's no-fly zone proposal even got short shrift from Baroness Ashton, the EU's foreign policy guru, whose appointment was engineered by the previous Labour government in the forlorn hope that London would be able to exert more influence over the direction of EU policy.

But Lady Ashton has cast aside her Whitehall roots, and instead sided with Mrs Merkel, preferring to highlight the risks of a no-fly zone rather than the moral bankruptcy of allowing innocent Libyan civilians to be massacred by the demented Gaddafi clan. The cry of appeasement can once again be heard echoing through the corridors of Brussels. ....

While President Barack Obama appears incapable of deciding on an effective course of action, Hillary Clinton, the US Secretary of State, insists that there will be no fly zone without authorisation from the UN Security Council. As Russia and China have both indicated their opposition, a resolution approving military intervention is unlikely to be forthcoming.

Our president is indecisive and ineffectual, and our bureaucracy seeks direction from the UN.

How far we have fallen.

Right here is the problem. No leadership. The world had better be able to hold on till we can get rid of this feckless idiot.

Sorry, but Cameron should read Tony Blair’s book to see how it’s done.

If Bush was still President......

1. Mouth would have remained shut even with the criticism of the media.
2. When he did open his mouth upon the bombing of civilians, it would be to give 24 hrs for the criminals to surrender
3. When the 24 hrs were up, massive air strikes would decimate the enemy air force
4. special ops and drones would support rebels in taking back their country or negotiating a military surrender and the forming of a new government

In other words, everything Obama wouldn’t do

It is pure idiocy for the US to get involved. Gadaffi is going to survive absent US troops on the ground.

P.S. In fairness to Cameron, I will add that it is almost impossible for the British PM to exercise truly effective leadership in foreign affairs without a strong President of the United States in his corner.

We do not have a strong POTUS.

Just like the U.S.A. benefits when the U.K. backs us, they need the “special relationship” as well. Obambi is all about dissing the Brits, not encouraging and maintaining our special relationship.

And then like Bush we would be expected to remain for over a decade to referee the many deadly quarrels that would spring up among the rebels.

Their cheers (like those of the Iraqis in liberated Baghdad) would soon be replaced by sneers and IEDs.

Within days of Bush ordering a no-fly zone he would be attacked by the Media, by the Democrats, by the Dyke Rachel Maddow and called an idiot.

The French and British want a no fly zone??? Fly over there and start one. Don’t suck us in and then back out on us.

Where is the Saudi Air Force?

Allowing innocent Libyan citizens to be massacred??

LMAO these innocents will turn on us like Rabid dogs the first time a friendly fire bomb hits the wrong target.

Learn from history?? Damned right ,learn from Iraq, and stay the heck out of there.

Our president is indecisive and ineffectual, and our bureaucracy seeks direction from the UN.

The Presidency is Osama Obama's first management job. Before January of '09 he had never even managed an ice cream stand.Add that fact to his community organizer mentality and the results are perfectly predictable. This country's enemies had him figured out from Day 1.Some of our own people haven't *yet* figured him out...and others have but applaud what they see.

Let France do it— a few troops and planes and the mad man will be out. Then they make a deal with the new President-for-life and reap the rewards in cheap oil, trade treaties, and such—Frances African Empire expands.
