GOP Senators Introduce National 'Right-to-Work' Bill to Restrict Unions

A group of conservative U.S. senators has introduced a bill to restrict unions from forcing workers to join and pay dues as a condition of employment.

The move on Capitol Hill comes as several states consider what's known as "right-to-work" legislation -- proposals that have met stiff resistance. Indiana Republicans recently shelved their right-to-work bill after it sparked protests at the capital and after Democrats fled the state to block it, mimicking the tactic used by Wisconsin lawmakers holding up Gov. Scott Walker's anti-union proposal.

But GOP senators in Washington said national legislation is needed to stop the "strong-arm political tactics" they claim labor bosses are using to compel new employees into joining their ranks. They introduced the National Right to Work Act Tuesday.

DeMint was joined by seven other co-sponsors, including Sens. Tom Coburn, R-Okla.; Orrin Hatch, R-Utah; Mike Lee, R-Utah; Rand Paul, R-Ky.; James Risch, R-Idaho; Pat Toomey, R-Pa.; and David Vitter, R-La.

I sure hope so. If half the people on FR don’t see the evil in private unions, then this country is truly doomed.

I don't disagree with the goal, but I am questioning the means. Shouldn't the 10th Amendment be a factor in whether this should be federal legislation or not? Is there a truly enumerated power in the Constitution (as opposed to an inferred power from a penumbra) that means this is a federal and not a state issue?

It is a federal law (the Wagner Act) that enables unions to organize and operate as they do. It is another federal law (Taft-Hartley) that enables states to opt out of the closed shop provision (right-to-work).

Rather than a national right-to-work law, a better solution would be to implement Taft-Hartley nationwide, then let individual states opt out.

Imagine the union trying to get a closed shop initiative thru the legislatures...

Great.
Our affiliate moved him to the 11:00PM spot (from 8:00) when he went to the 3 hour format. Hacked me off. Anyway, his show is uploaded and ready at 9:30 or of course you can listen live online at 5:00. I’m on dial up so...it doesn’t work well.

Thank you. I try. I find that of ALL the deeply ingrained myths that the left has created through their total control of almost all media for the last 60 or so years, the story of the labor union is the most thoroughly entrenched. I would bet my life on the fact that we will NEVER undo this myth.

“A neutral question - is this a proper use of federal authority?”
___________-

Good question. Just because I agree with the idea, doesn’t mean the fed gov’t should dictate this.

Interesting headline. See, it's not, "A group of conservative U.S. senators has introduced a bill to give workers choice", it's a bill to "restrict unions". What the hell has got into Fox News?

A neutral question - is this a proper use of federal authority?

A better question - can workers be forced to join a union and pay extortion ("dues") as a condition of employment?

If you can find a right to a job in the Constitution, be my guest.

Do all of the unemployed have the right to exchange their labor for pay? Why is not one compelled to hire them? If a company doesnt hire someone, are they depriving that person of their rights?

In the Declaration, the right to pursuit of happiness is declared as a Natural Right, given by the creator. Happiness (a job) is not a Natural Right, only the pursuit is.

So no, I dont have a right to work. I can be fired tomorrow. I am able to exchange my labor for pay because someone who owns a company needs someone with my skillset to perform the job.

I don't think it's just Fox. This entire "union rights," "collective bargaining rights," etc. rhetoric is now so ingrained in this culture we have a Herculean task just in getting people to clearly comprehend the issues.

Add to that...why on earth are people referred to as "workers"? Isn't that just a little Marxist?

Sometimes it just seems we have a long way to go...

Nobody said anything about a "right to a job."

Do all of the unemployed have the right to exchange their labor for pay?

Wouldn't everyone?

I did.

And then you came back with people having the right to exchange labor for money, which is a job.

And no, everyone does not have the right to a job. The unemployed dont and the employed dont.

Big mistake. We sent them there with a carefully restrained list of issues. There was wide public agreement on those issues. Adding all this peripheral stuff just loses you part of your support. Ed Rollins was right, every stance you take will result in those opposed becoming enemies. Take enough stances, and everybody will find something not to like about you.

Add to that the fact that the left is trying to confuse the issue of reigning in corrupt public unions with being anti-union, and all these guys will accomplish is to help them. It’s a state issue, let the states that want it, do it.

It is a federal law (the Wagner Act) that enables unions to organize and operate as they do. It is another federal law (Taft-Hartley) that enables states to opt out of the closed shop provision (right-to-work).

"Ten weeks after Wagner's victory, Kennedy looked to mobilize public-sector workers as a new source of Democratic Party political support. In mid-January 1962, he issued Executive Order 10988, which gave federal workers the right to organize in unions."

I think it may have to be a "top-down" approach.

Do you mean closed shop or union shop? In most fields, closed shops are illegal.

In general, right to work laws prohibit union shops. Most closed shops are already prohibited.
