Japan earthquake factbox: Entire Japan coast shifted 2.4 metres, earth axis moves ten inches

A massive tsunami sweeps in to engulf a residential area after a powerful earthquake in Natori, Miyagi Prefecture in northeastern Japan March 11, 2011. The biggest earthquake to hit Japan in 140 years struck the northeast coast on Friday, triggering a 10-metre tsunami that swept away everything in its path, including houses, cars and farm buildings on fire.

Cars and destroyed homes swept by a tsunami are seen on a street after an earthquake in Kesennuma City, Miyagi Prefecture March 12, 2011. Japan confronted devastation along its northeastern coast on Saturday, with fires raging and parts of some cities under water after a massive earthquake and tsunami that likely killed at least 1,000 people.

The letters "SOS" are seen written on the ground at Minami Sanriku Elementary School, after an earthquake in Minami Sanriku Town, Miyagi Prefecture March 12, 2011. Japan confronted devastation along its northeastern coast on Saturday, with fires raging and parts of some cities under water after a massive earthquake and tsunami that likely killed at least 1,000 people.

USGS Dr. Dave Applegate says the Japan earthquake ruptured a 180 mile long by 50 mile wide section of the Earth's crust.

Scientists from the United States Geological Service answered questions from the public this afternoon, with some startling revelations made.

* The first tsunami wave in Samoa was reportedly one foot tall, but the seventh wave was much larger, indicating coastal areas shoudl remain on tsunami advisory well after the first wave hits, even if that wave appears small.

* 100+ aftershocks have rated 5.0 magnitude or more in Japan since the initial shake.

* Earth's axis has reportedly shifted ten inches as a result of the quake, and Japan's coast is said to have permanently shifted 2.4 metres.

* The quake was 900 times stronger than the quake that hammered San Francisco in 1989.

* Aftershocks from the Peru earthquake of almost a year ago are still felt to this day.

* Honshu earthquake occurred on ocean floor of the Pacific plate, bumping 250 miles of coastline.

* Shaking was felt as far away as China.

* The Honshu quake was not as large as the 1964 Alaska earthquake, but was comparable to the recent Chile earthquake.

* Tsunami waves that hit California earlier today washed three onlookers out to sea. Two have been recovered.

* St Louis, Missouri media outlets report that city has moved an inch as a result of the quake.

* Waves from the ensuing tsunami reached 32 feet high.

I’m hoping Chicago is ten inches closer to the equator.

"earthquake moves earth’s axis"

It means the north and south poles aren't where they were a couple days ago. Picture a quarter spinning on a table with George Washington's image straight up and down. Imagine a force acting upon the quarter so suddenly that without stopping it's spin, George is suddenly tilted to one side or the other.

Thank you for giving a really nice explanation. What you describe I can and did imagine. It does not correspond, however, to the axis moving by a given number of inches, which implies parallel shift.

Tampa International just did their runways over due to the magnetic pole shift. I wonder what happens now.

It was super windy here the night after Christmas that the tsunami hit Indonesia. Our flag pole snapped off. The next day, we found out about the EQ and tsunami.

The night this hit, again, it was very windy here by the Gulf. The flag pole's not ever been put back up so it didn't break again.

People who don't pray: start. People who already pray: pray more. (new tag line). Seeing the generic vehicles, some with their wiper blades going as if that was going to help.

It is haunting how all can be swept away in a flash.

OK...try this one. If you were standing exactly on the North Pole the night before the quake, and saw a star at 45 deg. elevation off the horizon, that star would neither appear to rise or set as the earth rotated, but during the course of 24 hours, would appear to move around the sky parallel to the horizon.

The night following the quake, if you stood in the exact location you had the night before (which was no longer the North Pole), that same star would appear to slightly ascend and descend over the course of the night. You would have to stand a few inches from where you were (i.e. the new North Pole) to again observe that star moving parallel to your horizon.

Hope that clarified and didn't confuse!

This was on late night am radio last night. Some guy said that it was related to the solar flares.

He said that lunar events affect the tides and gravity but the sun affects earthquakes (I think?)

I think I understand the picture you describe. It appears to be different, however, to saying "axis moves X inches." An axis of rotation is a straight line. When someone says it moved X inches, that means all points of that line moved X inches; i.e., the axis has experienced a parallel shift.

What you describe is a movement of a point on the earth's surface, and I understand that this may happen if the axis shifts (rotates) by an angle (with respect to the ecliptic). It is the parallel shift that I don't understand.

It’s BOTH Bush’s fault, and Ronald Reagan’s fault, too.
