Left: Global warming caused the earthquake

This is not a parody.

Treehugger, oft-quoted by lefty journalists, really believes that today’s earthquake in Japan was caused by global warming.

From Treehugger:

I know headlines like that might just make most folks roll their eyes at this point — I mean, what doesn’t climate change cause these days, am I right? And I realize that people are skeptical of news-cycle tie-ins, like this very story appears to be. But just because it’s sort of depressing to keep tabs on all of the myriad impacts of ol’ climate change occurring the world over, doesn’t mean we should be glossing over facts like this: Geologists believe that global warming may already be causing more earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions. After all, screwing with the world’s ornery climate system to the extent which we have is bound to have far-reaching effects — effects like huge amounts of melting ice causing the earth’s crust to “bounce” up, potentially triggering earthquakes.

Which makes sense. And if you ask me, now is a perfectly apt time to be analyzing such possible causal relationships, like the one between climate change and earthquakes (which set off tsunamis). You are, after all, perhaps turning to a green site like TreeHugger to examine the environmental implications of various world events. But some insist this reeks of opportunism (especially those amongst the anti-climate crowd) — and therefore should be immediately written off as sensationalism.

Are these people mentally ill?

From Grist, another site oft-quoted by lefty journalists:

In a little-heeded warning issued at a 2009 conference on the subject, experts outlined a range of mechanisms by which climate change could already be causing more earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic activity. “When the ice is lost, the earth’s crust bounces back up again and that triggers earthquakes, which trigger submarine landslides, which cause tsunamis,” Bill McGuire, professor at University College London, told Reuters.

Melting ice masses change the pressures on the underlying earth, which can lead to earthquakes and tsunamis, but that’s just the beginning. Rising seas also change the balance of mass across earth’s surface, putting new strain on old earthquake faults, and may have been partly to blame for the devastating 2004 tsunami that struck Southeast Asia, according to experts from the China Meteorological Administration.

This is nutty.

These frauds have no idea of what they are talking about.

The Earth isn’t held together by layers of ice that work like duct tape.

Goodness are they dumb.

Somebody will inevitably blame it on Fat Man and Little Boy.

I'm thinking Ted Kennedy and Barack Obama didn't have THAT much to do with it...

What do you expect from people who think it's ok to kill a baby right up until it's 18 months old or so.

Reminds me very much of this passage from the bible: Matthew 24:12 Sin will be rampant everywhere, and the love of many will grow cold.

I take exception to this explanation. I heard (Rush?) that the Nissan Leaf and Toyota Prius are manufactured in the Sendai area. I think it is much more likely DumBO caused the earthquake in order to sell more Chevy Volts.

The Treehugger.

Walking through the woods a man comes up to another man hugging a tree with his ear firmly against the tree.

Seeing this he inquires, “Just out of curiosity, what the hell are you doing?”

“I’m listening to the music of the tree.”

“You gotta be kiddin’ me.”

“No, would you like to give it a try?”

“Well, OK...” So he wraps his arms around the tree and presses his ear up against the tree.

With this the other guy slaps a set of handcuffs on him, takes his wallet, jewelry, car keys, then strips him naked and leaves.

Two hours later another nature lover strolls by, sees this guy handcuffed to the tree, stark butt-naked, and asked, “What the hell happened to you?”

He tells the guy the whole story about how he got there.

While he was telling his story, the other guy shakes his head in sympathy, walks around behind him, kisses him behind the ear and says, “Sweetie, this just isn’t your day.”

“How much have sea levels actually increased in the past 30 year?
It couldn’t have been more than an inch or two.”

Yeah, IIRC, about two inches max.

I guess they don’t realize that earthquakes and tsumanis aren’t really that new.

In fact there was an epic earthquake in Lisbon in 1755.

And I looked it up, it happened long before the invention of the SUV.

But.....but.....now the earthquake and tsunami have shutdown the fishing fleets that fin sharks, kill dolphins, and slaughter whales.

It's not too late, FReepers, we can still fix this.

We need to all band together, gird our loins and make individual sacrifices for the greater good of the planet.

I think we should all mail Treehugger an ice cube! I'm sure he will know exactly what to do with it...
