Between 200-300 bodies wash up on Sendai beach, Japan

Reuters - 03/11/2011 | Tokyo |

Over two hundred bodies which have turned up dead on the beach in Sendai, Japan, appear to have drowned. The number of people missing is estimated at 349 and rising.

The biggest earthquake on record to hit Japan rocked its northeast coast on Friday, triggering a 10-metre tsunami that killed hundreds of people and swept away everything in its path.

Thousands of residents near a nuclear plant in Fukushima prefecture, north of Tokyo, were told to evacuate as a precaution after the 8.9 magnitude quake, but the government said no radiation was leaking.

Up to 300 bodies were found in the coastal city of Sendai, media said. NHK television said the victims appeared to have drowned. The extent of the destruction along a lengthy stretch of coastline suggested the death toll could rise significantly.

Got this from my best friend who’s Inlaws live in Japan.

“She has an aunt though that lives by the coast in Sendai which was the hardest hit -— no one has heard from her yet....Miyuki (his wife) is frantic this morning”

Praying for the survivors. No doubt thousands are dead, though I’ve yet to see the media say that.

I couldn't imagine the sight of hundreds of bodies washing up on the beach. I would feel like the reporter who watched the Hindenburg disaster.

Oh, the humanity! And all the passengers screaming around here. I told you; it—I can't even talk to people, their friends are out there! Ah! It's... it... it's a... ah! I... I can't talk, ladies and gentlemen. Honest: it's just laying there, mass of smoking wreckage. Ah! And everybody can hardly breathe and talk and the screaming. Lady, I... I... I'm sorry. Honest: I... I can hardly breathe. I... I'm going to step inside, where I cannot see it. Charlie, that's terrible. Ah, ah... I can't. Listen, folks; I... I'm gonna have to stop for a minute because [indecipherable] I've lost my voice. This is the worst thing I've ever witnessed.

So far none. SK is on the other side of Japan with regard to the quake zone.

If you look on Google Earth, you will see that the epicenter of this earthquake is about 75 miles east-northeast of the Sendai airport. 90 miles East of the epicenter is the subduction trench that is most likely the cause of the earthquake.

Ocean depth at the epicenter is about 3000 feet, at the trench the depth is 23,000 to 24,000 feet!
