First tsunami waves push into Hawaii
CNN international ^ | 3-11-11 | wire staff

Tsunami waves began rolling into Hawaii early Friday, with readings of between 6 and 8 feet expected in some areas following the giant earthquake that struck Japan.

Communities along much of the U.S. West Coast were under tsunami warnings, too.

The first impact in Hawaii was felt shortly after 3:07 a.m. local time (8:07 a.m. ET), according to Hawaii State Civil Defense, which issued a tsunami warning.

At 3:30 a.m., television images in Honolulu showed an increase in water coming ashore.

The National Weather Service said the waves could hit Oregon and California between 7:15 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. local time (10:15-10:30 a.m. ET).

Honolulu is planning for several contingencies, because it is not certain how large the waves could be and where they may rush inland, Mayor Peter Carlisle told CNN.

"It is a very difficult situation to confront," Carlisle said.

Hawaiian Public Radio news director Bill Dorman told CNN some roads were closed as a precaution. CNN meteorologist Rob Marciano said he expected the waves to first strike the island of Kauai.

Hawaiian emergency officials reminded residents that tsunami evacuation maps can be found in front of their telephone directories. People were being advised not to make unnecessary phone calls and a coastal evacuation was conducted.

Could the Super Moon have something to do with this?

That's the first thing I wondered when I saw the earthquake news this morning. We kow the moon affects ocean tides, so could it also affect tectonic plates and faults? Something to ponder.

Is The Super Moon Causing Chaos?

We are so close.

We are just at the beginning ... alot more, and worse, to come.

...but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come.... All these are the beginning of birth pains.

Amazing photography.

I was fortunate enough to spend a couple of weeks in Hilo with friends of my parents after my first year in college. If it weren’t for my family, I’d pick up and move there for good. I loved every aspect of my trip.

“The Quickening.....”

The person I first heard use that, “Art Bell” had made the correct observations, but his eyes were not focused on what it all meant and what it was leading too.

The Fox weather doomsayer is on right now saying the waves in Maui are horrible. He says you need to be on a 200’ cliff! You should give him a call and set him straight.

Why are they mad at media? Government officials ordered an evacuation. Seems if anyone is miffed they should be miffed at the people who issued the warning.

Tsunami headed for california. Wow.

Yeah, and Fox is reporting arrival times in EST.

Bleary-eyed Californians think they have three more hours to evacuate.

I am hoping the worse that happens in Maui is the beach sand gets washed away, which happens after big tropical storms there. Makes for horrible beach walking for awhile.
