Tokyo just got smacked hard. Still feeling tremors. Refrigerator broken, glass everywhere. I'm safe.
Other Japan FReepers check in!!
It looks like the epicenter was about 130 km from the coast. It probably wasn’t quite at max speed (900 km/hour), but if it was it would have hit the coast in less than 9 minutes. Just about the time you would have stumbled out of your damaged building and thinking about that, rather than the tsunami.

March 11, 2011 | 1:27 am The West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center has issued more details about the potential for small waves hitting the California coast due to the Japan earthquake.
Estimated arrival times:
PORT SAN LUIS HARBOR 8:09 a.m.
SANTA BARBARA HARBOR 8:17 a.m.
SANTA MONICA: 8:32 a.m.
SAN PEDRO 8:32 a.m.
NEWPORT BEACH 8:45 a.m.
LA JOLLA 8:48 a.m.
Officials don’t expect the waves to cause damage. But as a precaution, officials are likely to urge people to avoid beach areas.
Officials said people living in low-lying coastal areas should seeking higher ground as a precaution and listen for special instructions from emergency agencies. Unusual wave action from the quake might last for several hours.

Good. Stay safe, though.:-)
Thank you

FOX anchors and person who knows US Navy ops in Hawaii say that they are “monitoring” the situation and that Pearl is a fairly well-protected bay.
I don’t know. I would hope they know what they’re doing.
NOAA still reporting Tsunami WARNING for areas NORTH of Point Conception, and a Tsunami ADVISORY south of there, which would include LA and Orange counties.
If you are concerned, Google your local city or county “tsunami inundation” maps to see what areas are expected to be affected.
The tsunami footage from Japan was frightening, but it won’t likely be that devastating further away as it weakens.
Ahh, thanks.

The decision has been made for ships at Pearl Harbor to remain in port. We continue to monitor the situation closely.
I don’t recall them saying just how many minutes after the quake hit that the wave hit. They just said a few minutes. No time for anyone to get to safety. That’s why that 80,000 population is so heart-wrenching. :-(
