David Cameron, the Prime Minister, and Nicolas Sarkozy, the French President, have written a joint letter to European allies, urging them to be ready for "all possible contingencies" in Libya, including the possible imposition of a no-fly zone to prevent air attacks by dictator Muammar Gaddafi.
The letter, on the eve of an emergency summit of European Union leaders in Brussels, condemned the Libyan authorities use of airpower in attacks on their own people as "unacceptable".
And Mr Cameron and Mr Sarkozy called on the EU to unite in calling for Gaddafi to go, arguing that his regime has "lost any legitimacy it may have once had".
"Since the Libyan people have started to rise against Muammar Gaddafi's brutal regime, the world is witnessing on a daily basis an unacceptable continuation of violence and repression in Libya," wrote the two men in a letter to European Council President Herman van Rumpoy, copied to the other 25 EU leaders.
"Ignoring UN Security Council resolution 1970 demands as well as calls from regional organisations and the whole international community, Gaddafi's regime continues to attack his own people, including with aircraft and helicopters. It is clear to us that the regime has lost any legitimacy it may have once had.
"This deliberate use of military force against civilians is utterly unacceptable. As warned by the Security Council, these acts may amount to crimes against humanity. All those involved in deciding, planning or executing such actions must know that they will be held accountable."
They called on EU partners, Nato allies and friends in the Arab world and Africa to unite in calling on Gaddafi to go and sending a clear signal that the Interim Transitional National Council in opposition stronghold Benghazi are "valid political interlocutors" in preparing for the aftermath

Lets see if this becomes more than talk. It would be nice to see some leadership on the issue—its not going to come out of Obama’s White House.
Wonder if Western European powers miss “cowboy diplomacy” yet.
Let Europe deal with Libya. That’s the last place we need to be.
Talk is cheap. I doubt Cameron and Sarko would actually drop bombs or put boots on the ground.
I know I don’t want the US involved in Libya - which seems to be a fight among Libyan tribes/gangsters battling for influence and a cut of oil sales.
How sad to hear these old homo’s, once powerful nations, bluster like they could still have an effect.
As much as I would like for Gadfly to be pushing up daisies, as far as I am concerned we have no bidness over there. If we go there why do we not go to Venzuela, Cuba and others?
Let the Brits and Frogs mess this one up.
Our ONLY interest there is that the 2mil/bbl of oil continues to flow to market and the highest bidder.
Obama’s too busy talking about Bullying. He can’t hear the rumblings even with those big ears!
(Wonder if Maureen Dowd feels bad now? I bet she’s ostricized for her ‘mean girl’ remarks!)
To avoid establishment of a Muslim Caliphate, continued civil war reignites old hatreds between the tribes that insures no faction can gain stable control.
The war is damaging to the long term plans of the communists and the Islamists.
I wouldn't be willing to do anything to keep it going, but I am perfectly willing to cheer it on.
I recommend that Obama appoint O'Reilly his Bullying Czar. Further, that he allows O'Reilly to retain his bully pulpit on Fox while serving as the country's head Bullmaster.
And finally, Bill will have exclusive Super Bowl interview rights with the president as long as he continues to spread the socialist bull around on his nightly show as he does now.
Yay....we're Bullish on Bill!

When Americans rise up to kick Obama’s ass out of the White House will the French and Brits come and help?
Well at least there are two men, with ba**s, who are not to busy planning parties, vacations or golfing.
Exactly. It's not our fight. If we engaged in this conflict, whover emerges as the winner will shout "Death to America" and burn an American flag in celebration.
With the dearth of leadership in DC these days, the best we can hope for is the status quo.
