Northern Pass is about greed, not green
unionleader.com ^ | Friday, Feb. 4, 2011 | John Harrigan

The Northern Pass is a no-winner for the North Country. The power and profits will go far Down Below, to Boston and Connecticut. We will get nothing but the leavings -- short-lived jobs, a dwindling tax benefit and a huge scar on a landscape that is our legacy, our soul, and our future.

They [i.e., the power companies] should have to prove need, not greed.

Yep, let's stick our heads in the sand, bitch about how we've lost textile mills and other jobs, but not "export" the surplus power we ourselves don't need. Instead, let's just let that power go to waste. Good thinking, you chlorophyl-brained idiot.

Don't know much about this story but this sentence made sense:

....there is an existing Quebec Hydro corridor down through northeastern Vermont, and the powers that be should be forced to simply acquire additional wider right of way there to accommodate the additional line.

The lines are there and would most likely be far more cost effective to expand them - the infrastructure is in place already.....(don't like the 'forced' thing being thrown around)

I guess I should have included some comments here so that people might read the article before going off ranting and insulting.

I have been following a FR for 7 or 8 years now, I go into hives when it is down. Yes my screen name is Harry Pothead, no I no longer smoke it (20 years ago last time?). I do however think it is funny and have been tempted to get rid of it, but resisted so far.

I am anything but a tree hugger, but am avid outdoorsman, LOVE New Hampshire, own land 5 miles from Canada. My neighbors in NH think I am a tea party nut, I think of myself as a “nuckle dragging conservative”.

The North Country of New Hampshire is remote and beautiful. It takes a 4 hour drive for me to get there, and I go every weekend. I have spent 5 weekends at home in the last year.

A Quebec power company wants to put 150 foot towers down the middle of NH for power in MA. In the short term land owners will get payment, there will be some tax benefit for towns, but the long term damage to property values and tourist attraction will be devastating.

NH is a net exporter of power, why do we need to wreck our country side for the people of MA? Is it our fault they (I live in MA) continue to elect clueless Dems that hobble the energy industry at every turn?

Put a nuclear plant in your own back yard, don’t wreck mine.

Power companies are pretty much connected. PSNH is a subsidiary of NU - based in CT. They are in the process of merging/acquiring NStar.

I do like the idea of expanding the VT lines that are already there - there is probably a reason good/bad why they aren’t.

Rather have power lines than Windmills gracing the landscape.

Put a nuclear plant in your own back yard, don’t wreck mine.

This is a typical comment from people. Look at how the people in CA screamed when a nuclear power plant was propose about a decade ago. Yet, when the heat wave hit two summers ago, those same people scream bloody murder when the rolling brown-outs meant they couldn't use their air conditioners. If NH is a net exporter of energy, why should that be viewed as meaning that it shouldn't continue to be a net exporter? Clearly, the market has told you that you're no longer a good place for textiles and other industries, so what's your wish? A retreat to the Stone Age?

...but the long term damage to property values and tourist attraction will be devastating.

Really? Based on what? Is the run of the power line swath so wide that it kills off all tourism in NH? I don't think so. I'd like to see a true, unemotional, economic assessment of the pluses and minuses for the state. My guess is that, on balance, the state and its citizens would come out ahead.

I believe that there is a tax benefit to the power company to bring the power through NH and avoid Vermont. Not sure of the details but I recall reading about it in the Union Leader.
