The Tea Party is boiling over the hidden-camera video of an NPR executive calling the organization a gun-toting and Islam-hating collection of dummies in what is now fueling a new round of calls for cuts to public broadcasting.
In a statement sent to the Herald, the Tea Party lashed out at being blindsided by the radio boss calling his dinner-hour critique "baseless, hateful fiction." They are demanding an apology and sensitivity training for NPR brass.
The counter-attack comes after Ron Schiller, an NPR senior vice president for development and key fundraiser, was videotaped at a swank Washington restaurant while dining with two potential donors who claimed they were Muslim.
During dinner, according to a transcript of the video, Schiller slams the Tea Party going as far as saying the members are low-class and uneducated.
"The current Republican Party is not really the Republican Party. Its been hijacked by this group that is ... not just Islamophobic but, really, xenophobic," Schiller said. "They believe in sort of white, middle America, gun-toting - its scary. Theyre seriously racist, racist people."
Schiller has been placed on administrative leave and informed NPR he is leaving. He was due to go in May. NPR also released a statement saying they were "appalled" by Schillers comments.
The video slap mobilized the Tea Party last night.
"The Tea Party is composed of hardworking American citizens of every race, creed, and religion, whose taxes help fund NPR and pay Schillers salary," said Tea Party Express Chairman Amy Kremer. "Schillers ignorant comments lend overwhelming evidence for the need to stop all federal funding of NPR."
The Associated Press reports today that Republicans in Congress are renewing efforts to cut funding to public broadcasters following the video flap, calling it an example of a left-wing bias.
"This disturbing video makes it clear that taxpayer dollars should no longer be appropriated to NPR," House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.), said in a statement to AP. He added that executives have "finally admitted that they do not need taxpayer dollars to survive."
The budget bill passed by the House last month would end funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which supports programs distributed on NPR and PBS, according to the AP. CPB is getting $430 million in the current fiscal year.
The Tea Partys Kremer also knocked Schiller for insulting party members intelligence.
"Mr. Schiller shows blatant disrespect bordering on contempt for a constitutionally-based political movement," she said. "It is untenable that he would express such ignorant views in public or in private."
The video was posted Tuesday by James OKeefe on his Web site Project Veritas. OKeefes undercover videos have in the past captured behind-the-scenes footage of the community organizing group ACORN and Planned Parenthood.
On his Web site, OKeefe exclaims "were back" having "exposed the true hearts and minds at NPR." He also goes on to say Schiller admits in the video NPR "would be better off in the long-run without Federal funding."
OKeefe also urges visitors to his site -- www.theprojectveritas.com -- to sign a petition calling for Congress to investigate NPRs funding.
He also asks for funding to keep going undercover to break more gotcha footage, calling himself the "pimp" who caught ACORN unaware.
"Right now, we only have 5 cameras," he writes. "Just think about the corruption we could uncover with 100!"

no relation, it’s been said
Must be “National stick it to the person/people who pay you a lot of money for a marginal job” Month. Charlie Sheen is the spokesperson I think.
“Is Vivian Schiller his wife. The woman that just got ousted?”
Not related
just 2 POS with same name at one leftwing place
Defund NPR and pull NPR’s non-profit status immediately.
NPR has been a Democrat megaphone for years. NPR should not have non-profit status.
And there’s National Public Radio CEO Vivian Schiller. Interesting. And Tea Party Express Chairman Amy Kremer. US politics have been taken over by German descendants. ;-)
The are both lefty Shillers, though.
NPR is trying to pass this off as Schiller’s own personal beliefs unrelated to NPR, instead of the truth, which is that Schiller’s statements were indicative of the larger culture at NPR.
More sincerely, remember that NPR is Hillary’s baby.
Um........we are, you sniveling candy ass. BOO!
Why????
Do people really think that NPR type of people have any other view of conservatives?
This is not news at all.
O’Keefe was just smart enough to get it on tape.
I actually think it's very funny! The big joke is when you hear a NPR statement saying they are fair minded and balanced; that's hilarious to hear!
If I was going to be I’d bet the guy on the tape could be someone ELSE’S wife.
i’m glad they said what they said about the tea party . because of it, a liberal was rooted out of a position of authority . sorry, but i’m a big boy and can take their cr@p without crying for an apology
More like reason to celebrate.
Thems thats going, get on the wagon. Them that ain't GET OUT OF THE WAY!!!!!!!
Wrong thread!! Sorry!!
And Schiller won't be taking his cushy replacement job at Aspen Institute.
