A Decatur man accused of punching a 14-year-old girl in the face for running into his son on the slopes in Colorado has pleaded guilty to third-degree assault.
The Vail Daily reported Tuesday that the plea from 41-year-old Scott Filler, a renowned malaria expert, was for a misdemeanor stemming from the December incident at Beaver Creek Ski Resort.
Police reports say Filler thought the teen was skiing carelessly when she bumped into his 4-year-old son. Eagle County sheriff's deputies say that's when he jumped on the girl and hit her with his fist. The girl said she was swerving to avoid another skier.
District Attorney Mark Hurlbert says Filler was sentenced to anger management classes and restitution, the amount of which would be determined by the girl.
Prosecutors also sought community service, but Hurlbert says the judge fined Filler $500 instead.
Three witnesses told deputies they observed Filler punch girl between two and four times.
The ski instructor who pulled the Decatur man off the girl told deputies Filler punched her "at least four times, using a closed fist," sheriff's Lt. Mike McWilliam told the AJC. Two other witnesses said they observed Filler yell at the girl before landing two or three punches, the sheriff's office spokesman said.
Filler, charged with misdemeanor child abuse, told deputies he thought the girl was skiing carelessly and had seriously injured his son. The boy was not hurt, however, and Filler apologized. The girl was treated for minor injuries at a local medical center.
Her father requested charges be filed against Filler, who was banned for life from Vail's six ski resorts.

There is simply no justification for a man punching a 14 year old girl like that for an accident. Are you related to the jerk or something that you're defending his actions? Or do you make it a habit to beat people up for accidents?

I have not been to China, but my experience in Korea was that they all believed they should be first in line. The rules of driving; Largest car has right of way, if you make eye contact, you loose. Japan I found to be totally opposite of Korea. People were courteous to everyone and waited their turn. I found the taxi cabs interesting in that they had white lace starched seat covers and when the driver was waiting for a fare would get out of the cab and wipe the car meticulously.

It would have been wrong to punch her if she’d been a 45 year old woman.
I’m interested to know what you think that 14 year old girl could have said that would have justified the adult male hitting her in the face with his fist two to four times.
Keep in mind, adult males are not even allowed to hit other adult males, if they say things that aren’t nice.

There was no threat, there was a collision between two children on a ski slope, it happens all the time ESPECIALLY on the beginner slopes where there's a higher concentration of low level skiers new to the sport. Plus the 4 year old wasn't injured..........
For the adult to hit the 14 year old girl with his fists is outrageous and uncalled for.....he got off light and was damn lucky her father wasn't on the scene or then he would have received the punishment he deserved......

My reaction would have been to rush to my 4 year old and make sure he was all right. Take care of him. This guys reaction was to ignore the kid and attack the girl.

I think this 41-year-old deserves a much stiffer sentence for his childish and reprehensible actions.

The 14 year old girl was probably learning to ski herself or she wouldn’t have been on that slope. She may not have known how to slow down yet.
