Scientists are reporting the first evidence that consumption of a healthful antioxidant substance in apples extends the average lifespan of test animals, and does so by 10 percent. The new results, obtained with fruit flies -- stand-ins for humans in hundreds of research projects each year -- bolster similar findings on apple antioxidants in other animal tests.
The study appears in ACS's of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. Zhen-Yu Chen and colleagues note that damaging substances generated in the body, termed free radicals, cause undesirable changes believed to be involved in the aging process and some diseases. Substances known as antioxidants can combat this damage.
Fruits and vegetables in the diet, especially brightly colored foods like tomatoes, broccoli, blueberries, and apples are excellent sources of antioxidants. A previous study with other test animals hinted that an apple antioxidant could extend average lifespan. In the current report, the researchers studied whether different apple antioxidants, known as polyphenols, could do the same thing in fruit flies.

You don’t know what your life span is until you die.
“You don’t know what your life span is until you die.”
Even then you won’t know, you’re dead.
Too many carbs in an apple for my weight loss diet (21)! Maybe when I graduate to the next level I can eat that LOL
Let me guess... for test subjects, they used worms. The control group, worms lying around the room, on the chairs, on the tables, some inside books (yah, bookworms), lived to be a few hours before they croaked... but, the worms in the apples... well, they lived for happy weeks, some for months. You could say this group of worms was as happy as clams... but they were still worms.
That’s what I’ve found so funny. All these reports on health and extending your life. How do you know how long you’ll live? I’d rather have my fun and not worry about it.
They used fruit flies, a common lab test subject because they live dhort lives and their genome is completely mapped....
My momma told me that. I wonder how much we paid for this study?
Does apple pie count?
Nope.
Apple cobbler, does, however....provided you have a lot of ice cream (dairy product, you see) with it...
Does apple pie count?
Applesauce with oatmeal for breakfast ... the food of Supermen.
My current test animal is a blue heeler.
She doesn’t eat apples. She likes to eat small critters.
She is happy and healthy.
Conclusion: Eating small critters creates health and happiness in test animal(s).
Apples are great for those who like to burn more calories than they take in.
Great news if you are a test animal.
Lead arsenate pesticide was sprayed on our apple orchards. Us`n kids never washed the apples before we ate them right off the trees. We ate them for 20 years. We had 2 cases of bone and skin cancers which appeared, biopsied, diagnosed then disappeared one week after the biopsy. My sister had colon cancer which metastasized to her lungs but both became benign in a month. The doctors thought they had misdiagnosed but realized later it had changed. The doctors couldn`t figure it out because they had started giving her chemo for the tumor which had already become benign. I figger it was the arsenic that did the cancers in.
I guess Ben Franklin was right.
Nonsense!
Eat, drink and smoke all you want. Your heart will work for as long as you live, apples or no apples
