As the abortion and gay marriage debates simmer beneath the national brawl over spending, a new poll shows Americans are becoming much less conservative when it comes to social issues.
A Pew Research Center poll released Thursday showed growing support for legal abortion, gay marriage and marijuana legalization.
The shifting attitudes on the latter topic were particularly dramatic. Americans opposed legalizing marijuana by an 81-16 split two decades ago. The latest poll showed just 50 percent now oppose the change, while 45 percent support legalizing marijuana.
On the abortion question, the survey showed Americans trending toward supporting abortion rights after a brief drift in the opposite direction. A 54 percent majority favored legal abortion, while 42 percent opposed it.
The poll also showed more Americans coming around to the idea of same-sex marriage. Though Americans were opposed to gay marriage by nearly 2-1 a decade ago, the latest poll showed 45 percent in support of it, with 46 percent in opposition.
The survey showed the public split just about even over the issue of gun control, with as many people supporting gun rights as gun regulation.

BS. If these issues were winners, then ballot questions, constitutional amendments and other items pertaining to them would be winning at the ballot box.
Pew Research Nuff said.
Mmmmm. They didn’t poll me...!
BS
The main point to take away from this poll is just how divided the nation has become over these issues.
So much for that "pro-life" trend we'd been seeing...
Reflects a growingly secular, unchurched younger generation that is also being subjected to public school propaganda. Not good.
Yes, about half of the nation has become thieving, drug-using fat zombies who lack basic intelligence or a moral compass.
Any trip to a local mall would reveal this.

The good news is that the federal subsidies for this behavior is about to evaporate.
What is “legal abortion?” How do they define it and how do they pitch it to those surveyed?
I hate to say it, but the Progressives have made significant inroads to the youth who are coming up in the world right now. I’m 31 and Conservative, but even my young years were different from what I’m hearing now. A lot of these kids are being completely brainwashed by Leftwing groupthink BS anymore.
It’s going to take an exceptional amount of work to turn the current batch of mushbrained, Internet-addled children into responsible adults. We’re seeing an enormous increase in the number of 25+ year old “adults” still living with mommy and daddy, and that’s only going to get worse.
I blame the decline of the church in our day-to-day life, the increase of on-demand lifestyles, and the invasion of socialism into our schools, our government, and the media. People have forgotten what it means to be patient, patriotic and religious in lieu of instant gratification, entitlement, and social apathy.
Horse droppings. Just because I am forced to tolerate does not mean I accept something. I am so wore out from having gay shoved at me. Even so I will never change my mind and will always pass on that it is not acceptable.
And it sounds like the nation is becoming more liberal on these issues.
Well, the social upheavals and changing attitudes, and ways of thinking which took root in the ‘60s have borne fruit. Young people who have been born and raised since that time have grown up in a very different culture.
Many young people have been raised in broken homes. A majority of black babies are born out of wedlock, for example.
Many young people do not have families which value religion or go to church. Moreso than previous generations, this generation has little contact with organized religion.
Young people today have been raised in a time when talk of sex has to do with “protection” and not any talk of moral values on that subject.
Schools don’t try to teach values, as there is a mindset that we don’t want to impose values, or have people think that certain morals and values are better than others. Moral relativism has given us a generation of youth without a good grounding in same.
Marijuana use doesn’t seem as serious compared to other drugs, and besides, many parents today used marijuana when they were younger, and are reluctant to discourage their kids use of same.
We have institutionalized a “baby mama” culture among critical masses of people.
The entertainment industry pumps out material that would have been banned or X rated years ago. The old rebel movie, “Midnight Cowboy” was rated X. By today’s standards, would it be PG or PG-13? The crap we see on TV and movies does influence people’s behavior and attitudes.
Why is the gay character on a sitcom always a likeable, funny character, if not for someone wanting to portray certain people always in a favorable light???
Fox? this would explain the liberal judge spewing about supporting homosexual based marrige.
It is all these effets who are buy the BS of born that way.
A majority of black babies are born out of wedlock, for example.
That's odd. I thought the majority of black babies were aborted. It is true that most of those that survive are illegitimate.
And so we have successfully pulled our national anchor from a set of immutable truths. What has followed, and what is to come, is wholly predictable. With no absolutes there cannot be any right and wrong, only things collectively agreed upon — until that too becomes challenged. All is relative, whatever is right in one’s own eyes is the law and no one can possibly judge because what's right for them might not be right for someone else, again, having become unmoored from immutable truth all is fair game and nothing is really wrong.
We are on a very bad path. Unless something changes it will not end well.
