MADISON -- The 14 missing Senate Democrats have until 4 p.m. today to return to the Capitol or face apprehension tantamount to arrest with or without force."
GOP Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald (R-Juneau) ordered the apprehension of the senators who fled the state two weeks ago to Illinois to avoid a vote on Gov. Scott Walker's budget repair bill.
Republicans voted 19-0 to give the Democrats until 4 p.m. Thursday to appear before the Senate.
"They have pushed us to the edge of a constitutional crisis," Fitzgerald said. "We simply cannot have democracy be held hostage because the minority wants to prove a point."
The Senate also voted for a "call of the house," which is the mechanism used to compel senators to return to the chamber.
That means the Senate sergeant at arms Ted Blazel can "with or without force" and with or without the help of any law enforcement officers in the state to take them into custody and bring them to the state Capitol.

We are entering a new era in which statesman are not honorable....they are beholdin' to their payers (unions, whatnot). They are desperate and have left the citizens of their states held hostage to their payees' whims. Tis the heart of this matter....Excellant Post..... and right to the point. Thank you.

Indiana,... which has the same problem with absent legislators who fled to Illinois,.... has enacted a fine of $250/day for legislators who don't show up by Monday. That's $1,250. a week. Will the union be also paying for this? I imagine so...they have far more than that too loose if this bill passes. I think the'll pay all they need to to keep these thugs on the front lines to fight their battle to maintain their coffers in the years ahead.

Your Welcome. It was no problem. Just wish since they had given 4pm as a deadline that action had been taken. But who knows. The Senate chamber hasn’t spoken. They could already have police and the senate sergeant at arms Ted Blazel looking for them. I suspect they didn’t just sit by and let the deadline just go by.

Will the Unions pay for their bail money ? or will the state accept that bail money from the Unions ? --
No bail needed. The arrest warrants are issued by the legislative body, with the sole function being to produce the person to the state senate. No judge, no jail, just come into the senate. One alternative available to each of those who has fled is to resign. Another is to show up for the scheduled legislative session.

Just watched Fox News this evening and heard Brett Baier quoting Obama making some comment (supposedly made “in private”) associating the Tea Partiers with being motivated by racism. I was sickened, disgusted by what I heard and shared with DH that Obama is deliberately being provocative, deliberately trying to instigate a reaction...he knew his comment would get out...absolutely deliberate and reprehensible.

I've heard that the Indiana legislators are having their stay in Illinois paid for by the state democrat party. The Wisconsisn legislators haven't been quite so stupid. They are complaining about the high cost of affording their little "vaca".
In Indiana's case I would think they broke some ethics laws of political contributions, "gift" amount per day laws, etc. Some citizen lawyers, the attorney (and their deputies) general need to review how and how much these people are being financed while they have vacated their legislative session.
It is a shame that these legislators have chosen such a dishonorable route, but they need to pay a consequence beyond the next election.

Senate head signs orders of contempt against Dems
UPDATED Thursday, March 3, 2011 --- 4:30 p.m.
"The Republican leader of the Wisconsin Senate has signed orders finding 14 AWOL Democrats in contempt. The orders signed Thursday allow the sergeant at arms to detain the missing senators and use police force if necessary..........
Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald says the orders are only binding in Wisconsin.
The Senate passed a resolution calling for the action earlier Thursday but gave Democrats until 4 p.m. to return. None of them did, which led Fitzgerald to sign 14 orders of detainment in dramatic fashion in the center of the Senate chamber.
State patrol officers watched silently from the gallery as Fitzgerald signed the orders executing the order." .......
