Breaking: 14 Democrats given until 4 p.m. to return or be 'apprehended ... with or without force'

MADISON -- The 14 missing Senate Democrats have until 4 p.m. today to return to the Capitol or face apprehension tantamount to arrest “with or without force."

GOP Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald (R-Juneau) ordered the apprehension of the senators who fled the state two weeks ago to Illinois to avoid a vote on Gov. Scott Walker's budget repair bill.

Republicans voted 19-0 to give the Democrats until 4 p.m. Thursday to appear before the Senate.

"They have pushed us to the edge of a constitutional crisis," Fitzgerald said. "We simply cannot have democracy be held hostage because the minority wants to prove a point."

The Senate also voted for a "call of the house," which is the mechanism used to compel senators to return to the chamber.

That means the Senate sergeant at arms Ted Blazel can "with or without force" and with or without the help of any law enforcement officers in the state to take them into custody and bring them to the state Capitol.

APNewsBreak: Wis. Gov. Walker says layoff notices will start Friday if union bill isn’t passed
03-03-2011 04:22 PM EST
MADISON, Wis. (Associated Press) —

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker says he will start issuing layoff notices to state workers on Friday if his bill calling for them to pay more for their benefits and taking away collective bargaining rights isn’t passed by then.

He said in an interview Thursday with The Associated Press that he has to start this week so the state can achieve savings he envisioned under the bill starting in April. The layoffs wouldn’t take effect for 31 days and they could be revoked later.

Walker says he’s also negotiating with Senate Democrats to get them to return and vote on the bill. The 14 senators left town two weeks ago to avoid voting on the measure.

He says he won’t concede on the collective bargaining issue, but he may on others.

Another deadline come and gone. Where are the layoff notices? Where’s the sweep of the capitol for cleaning and contraband searches?

Well...

How about those non-budget votes and the layoffs ... what about that 24-hour ultimatum? Don`t threaten.. just do it!

It does seem like a slow process though, doesn't it?

What can I say? Though I understand your question is rhetorical, and I want to be optimistic as much as the next guy, I'm sitting here in the swamps of Delaware watching this show in Wisconsin and all I can think is...the pubs once again don't want to get polished nails scratched and carefully placed head hairs all mussed.

Because we've got the Dems doing something so awful, something that you, I and our dogs know is something hard-working Americans across the fruited plains would never agree with, and NOTHING SEEMS TO HAPPEN!

And like the naked emperor, I watch all sorts of cheering, both on this forum and elsewhere, and I sit on my hands, wondering if I should mention that the Dems have not shown up for their jobs for fourteen straight days and have not suffered a consequence one save loss of direct deposit.

I sure don't see why the pubs don't pass a voter photo ID requirement if nothing else, you think?

But oh no, they don't want to ruffle feathers, the pubs want to be "civil", for some reason that flies right by my gray matter the pubs are worried about some kind of disdain for daring to do THEIR job while the "heroes" get foot pedicures in Illinois.

One more deadline, one more day, some Dem managed to get his paycheck by trickery as I read, one more smirk at the proper pubs...and what's worst of all...OUR OWN SIDE SEEMS TO THINK WE'RE WAGING THE BATTLE OF THE CENTURY HERE!

And yet absolutely NOTHING has happened.

Reminds me of those parents that say “ I’m counting to ten”....and THEN if ... 9,8,7,6,,3,2 1,..I MEAN IT!!! You had better stop or ...ONE MORE TIME counting to ten.....repeat as needed... sigh. Oh my do we have those kinds of leaders in our Government today?
