Fox News' Lies Keep Them Out of Canada
Reader Supporting News ^ | 03/01/2011 | Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

As America's middle class battles for its survival on the Wisconsin barricades - against various Koch Oil surrogates and the corporate toadies at Fox News - fans of enlightenment, democracy and justice can take comfort from a significant victory north of the Wisconsin border. Fox News will not be moving into Canada after all! The reason: Canadian regulators announced last week they would reject efforts by Canada's right-wing Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, to repeal a law that forbids lying on broadcast news.

Canada's Radio Act requires that "a licenser may not broadcast ... any false or misleading news." The provision has kept Fox News and right-wing talk radio out of Canada and helped make Canada a model for liberal democracy and freedom. As a result of that law, Canadians enjoy high quality news coverage, including the kind of foreign affairs and investigative journalism that flourished in this country before Ronald Reagan abolished the "Fairness Doctrine" in 1987. Political dialogue in Canada is marked by civility, modesty, honesty, collegiality, and idealism that have pretty much disappeared on the US airwaves. When Stephen Harper moved to abolish the anti-lying provision of the Radio Act, Canadians rose up to oppose him fearing that their tradition of honest non-partisan news would be replaced by the toxic, overtly partisan, biased and dishonest news coverage familiar to American citizens who listen to Fox News and talk radio. Harper's proposal was timed to facilitate the launch of a new right-wing network, "Sun TV News" which Canadians call "Fox News North."

I'm trying to find a sentence in this article that isn't DRIPPING with the typical liberal cliche talking points.

I’m guessing Canadian-content regs keep them out of Canada. If Fox opened up a network that discussed Canadian politics, that’d probably be okay.

“Cooroocoocoocoocoocoocooooo...cooroocoocoocoocoocoocooooo...
“G’day and welcome to Fox News Canada. I’m Bob McKenzie and this is my brother Doug.”

“How’s it goin’, eh?”

“Beauty, eh?”

It’s also complete BS!

“They got the license to broadcast ages ago.”

Shortbus rider needs to spend time in Canada so he knows WTH he’s talking about.

...fans of enlightenment, democracy and justice...

The self-regard of the left knows no bounds. Since they are incapable of viewing themselves with any sort of honesty or truthfulness, is it really much of a surprise that there understanding of everything else is just as flawed?

What a bunch of fearful weenies.

Fox is not even that conservative (”Conservative”: AKA as truthful and fair). Lukewarm and unreliable at best.

What would these liberal pussies do with a real conservative media presence? Free Republic TV sounds good to me.....

I wonder what criteria they propose to determine if someone is lieing.

A lie is the deliberate telling of a falsehood.

If someone tells a falsehood, but they believe it to be true, that person is not lieing.

If someone tells a truth that another believes to be false, the first person is not lieing.

You can really “awaken the sleeping giant” in someone by accusing them of lieing when they believe they are telling the truth.

Are there two Canadas? The one I remember had a kangaroo court going after Mark Steyn for daring to criticize Islam.

Is this some kind of joke, or satire?

This makes no sense either... we have several friends who live in the Montreal, Quebec area. They've been enjoying the Fox News Channel for several years. How can Robert F. Kennedy Jr state that "Fox News has been kept out of Canada"?

lib fascists rule in canuckstan

Yes, it isn't a far leap from
"No news can broadcast lies in Canada"
to "You can't lie against allah and his prophet in Canada"
and finally "You can't defame islam in Canada".

I think Canada's being preped for sharia compliance.

I think what the idiot is referring to is that Fox wanted to set up a Canadian version in Canada. The US version is of course available now although for quite a while it wasn’t. There are Canadian news channels already and a new one by the relatively conservative Toronto Sun paper group has run into flak from the usual suspects but will likely begin at some point. There is no CNN or MSNBC Canuck version btw.

The leftist definition of "freedom" -- having the government silence unapproved political speech.

The lack of "Fairness Doctrine" prevents investigative journalism? WTH?
