Mysterious Case of Missing Sunspots Solved
Live Science ^ | 02 March 2011 | Charles Q. Choi

The source of a mysterious drought of sunspots in recent years apparently originated beneath the star's solar skin, investigators find.

. . .

"Sunspots have been more or less continuously observed since Galileo trained his telescope on the sun in the early 17th century," said astrophysicist Dibyendu Nandi at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research in Kolkata, who led the study.

The sun periodically sees an ebb and flow in the number of sunspots, a cycle that lasts approximately 11 years. However, near the end of Solar Cycle 23, which peaked in 2001, solar activity entered an unusually long "minimum" with a large number of days without sunspots and a very weak polar magnetic field.

"One has to go back almost 100 years to find a solar minimum with a larger number of spotless days," Nandi explained.

However, this drought ultimately did end in 2009. The sun is currently in its next weather cycle, Solar Cycle 24.

OMG, my carbon footprint is causing the Sun's weather to change! Someone tell AlGore - maybe he can do something about it!!!

Less sunspots seem to coincide with lower solar irradiance which causes cooling.

Seeing as we are 12,000 years into the current interglacial period and that typically, interglacials last 10,000 years, we are probably headed for “interesting times”.

I’m sure it’s caused by global warming.

Less sunspots seem to coincide with lower solar irradiance which causes cooling.

Also reduced solar wind allows more cosmic rays to enter the atmosphere, interacting with water vapor, causing clouds, lowering temperature.

Well I’ve tried to tell all of you that if you don’t quit using so much solar energy we’re gonna run out. Look what you’ve done!

If I understand right, more sunspots means warmer weather. How much do you want to bet that the warmer weather will NEVER be traced to the sunspots?

"We do not understand the intricacies of these processes to a great detail," Nandi said.

Nandi will do well to consider how little is understood, given the state of computer modeling in situations where the results cannot be confirmed by empirical evidence. Historical climate projections come immediately to mind.

I've often thought that there might be a tipping point. Whatever it is that causes Earth to cool down (and sunspots look like a great candidate) gets to the point that snow cover lasts longer than usual. Then the greater snow cover, along with another unlucky sunspot cycle further extends the snow cover. At some point enough sunlight is reflected back off the snow that an ice age starts. The ice age lasts longer than the interglacial periods because the return of normal sunspots isn't enough to clear off the snow (since the ice caps are now reflecting the snow).
Man made greenhouse gases are the only thing saving mankind from 100,000 years of unfarmable northern temperate lands.
Now where do I get my grant to prove this?

That is awesome. Thanx Whenifhow !

For some unknown reason that inspired me to remember the brilliant poem from the globe's foremost authority on warming:

"untitled poem"

One thin September soon
A floating continent disappears
In midnight sun

Vapors rise as
Fever settles on an acid sea
Neptune's bones dissolve

Snow glides from the mountain
Ice fathers floods for a season
A hard rain comes quickly

Then dirt is parched
Kindling is placed in the forest
For the lightning's celebration

Unknown creatures
Take their leave, unmourned
Horsemen ready their stirrups

Passion seeks heroes and friends
The bell of the city
On the hill is rung

The shepherd cries
The hour of choosing has arrived
Here are your tools
