EPA Reverses Itself on Fluoride
FoxNews.com ^ | February 22, 2011 | By Deirdre Imus

For decades, fluoride has been marketed and heralded as essential for good dental hygiene and used in most toothpastes and mouthwashes. In addition, parents have been routinely encouraged to give their kids cavity-fighting fluoride treatments when they visit the dentist. ...

But that was then and this is now. In a surprising reversal, last month EPA’s announced that it intends to lower the maximum amount of fluoride in drinking water because of growing evidence supporting the chemical’s possible deleterious effects to children’s health.

In 2006, the National Academy of Sciences report that found dental fluorosis – caused by too much fluoride – capable of putting children at risk of developing other dental problems including the breakdown of tooth enamel, discoloration and pitting. January’s EPA recommendation reversal was made following a revised risk assessment study that found 2 out of 5 adolescents had tooth streaking or spottiness and some pitting as a result of excessive fluoride. In addition, other studies have found excessive ingestion of fluoride capable of increasing the risk of brittle bones leading to fractures and debilitating bone abnormalities.

Has the EPA ever done anything right?

Just what I was thinking.

I’ve had good luck with Colgate’s Total brand toothpaste. It contains a small amount of a detergent, which discourages the formation of tartar. I suppose one could brush with liquid Joy, but it wouldn’t taste as good.

When I was expecting, I went to the local Babies R Us and bought one of everything. Later, I spread all my goodies out on the bed and looked at them. I noticed that one of the things I had bought was baby toothpaste and a baby toothbrush. Later, I asked my doctor, (or dentist--can't remember, now) why do babies need a special toothpaste. She replied that babies can't spit out toothpaste after brushing, they swallow it, so they make a special toothpaste without Floride!

It was only much later, at home, when drinking a glass of tap water that I realized what she said. I had a habit of swallowing tap water instead of spitting it out. Therein after followed horrid pregnant mom nightmares where I dreamed the floride that I had been innocently drinking somehow created a mutant baby. I'm still not sure if my baby is okay (He's twelve.)

Anybody else remember when the people who said fluoride was dangerous were derided as nut cases?

LOL...brilliantly funny movie...even though it slanders nearly everything military and those who serve.

But...even military people thought it was funnier than hell, so...that compensates for it...:)

Also, I've always wondered how an amount of fluoride small enough not to be toxic would be enough to have any effect on tooth decay for the small amount of time it actually is in contact with teeth.

I do remember reading that fluoride is a by-product of manufacturing aluminum and the gub'mint didn't know what to do with all that fluoride getting dumped into our waterways, so they came up with the idea that it was "added" to help prevent tooth decay. What a hoot!!

When I was in grade school we would go to the cafeteria (at schools on army bases) and we would get a toothbrush, some crap that was like strawberry-flavored valve grinding compound and a cup of water and a cup to spit in. Made me want to puke, but I did it like they told us cause my mom said it was good.

God bless her, I’ve hated dentistry ever since.

Fluoride can mess with your thyroid by displacing iodine. I filter mine out with an alumina filter.

I just bought some Colgate but it isn't Total it's Max White. Tastes a lot better than the Arm & Hammer baking soda I was using and seems to clean better with less. I was going to switch to Tom's after using a sample tube. I think you can get Tom's in fluoridated and without.

Then there is Peelu gum which is only supposed to whiten teeth. It has an extract of Peelu bark in it which is what Indians (sub-continent variety) use to floss and chew on which is why so many Indians have very white teeth. I have to wonder if that doesn't help the gums too since it scrubs the teeth pretty well. I chewed it for a while many years ago and it does whiten and polish the teeth.

I just had the roots planed on two teeth last week and tetracyline pumped into the gum pockets for $197 per tooth. I need to get control of this soon or I'll be eating soup the rest of my life. lol

I’d be happy to! I have zip, zero, nada to do with this company, and you don’t get bonuses for referring people. Just had to do that disclaimer.

Now, that said, it’s been a miracle to me and never in my life have I undergone such results (and feel like such a testimonial).

And, I personally know 10 people, with varying stages of gum disease, who are now getting EXCELLENT reports. Everyone who tried it told their mother who told so-and-so sort of thing. And I’m talking one who took his pockets down from nearly 10 to 3s and 4s. And others from 5-7 to 2-3.

I researched extensively at the time (everywhere from Amazon to any non-associated companies that did reviews) and did not find one bad review for this company. I thought they couldn’t all be paid by the company, now I know they were not, it’s true.

There are only three ingredients in this particular concoction. It *is* expensive, however, at Christmas they have super deals. And for new people, they throw freebies in too. And you can see how they break it down and what junk (mints, mouthwash, etc.) you can throw away to save money.

The stuff they have online (and books they send later with your new packet) about fluoride are horrific.

And p.s, yup, you pegged it about the fluoride (and some of the other junk) killing the good bacteria.

I read in a magazine some years ago that eating a piece of cheese before going to bed was good because the bacteria discouraged the formation of plaque. But why did they never come up with an extra sharp cheddar cheese toothpaste?! ;-)
