EPA Reverses Itself on Fluoride
FoxNews.com ^ | February 22, 2011 | By Deirdre Imus

For decades, fluoride has been marketed and heralded as essential for good dental hygiene and used in most toothpastes and mouthwashes. In addition, parents have been routinely encouraged to give their kids cavity-fighting fluoride treatments when they visit the dentist. ...

But that was then and this is now. In a surprising reversal, last month EPA’s announced that it intends to lower the maximum amount of fluoride in drinking water because of growing evidence supporting the chemical’s possible deleterious effects to children’s health.

In 2006, the National Academy of Sciences report that found dental fluorosis – caused by too much fluoride – capable of putting children at risk of developing other dental problems including the breakdown of tooth enamel, discoloration and pitting. January’s EPA recommendation reversal was made following a revised risk assessment study that found 2 out of 5 adolescents had tooth streaking or spottiness and some pitting as a result of excessive fluoride. In addition, other studies have found excessive ingestion of fluoride capable of increasing the risk of brittle bones leading to fractures and debilitating bone abnormalities.

Great. Here in Virginia, the groundwater has large amounts of naturally occurring fluoride.

my FIL is a dentist and claims that fluoride in toothpaste is good since it is not swallowed. But fluoride in tap water is not effective and may even be bad. This seems to back up his position.

I sure wish we had known years earlier...

I did stop using toothpaste about a year ago, using herbal drops, and never had better dentist reports in my life, about how healthy my gums are, etc. And I had a bad, rotting mouth (TMI) no matter what I did, what I ate, how religious I was about flossing. Night and day when I quit with the poisonous fluoridated toothpaste.

We’ve added flouride to the water since the 60’s.

It is like that in West Texas, too. Lot’s of folks have browned teeth because of it. That is why many Texans never bought the fluoride koolade.

We have well and septic. Haven’t had a cavity in years; in fact, not since I had to put up with “city” water.

Every single time I ever see a thread about fluoridation, that guy’s mug shows up...

“Mandrake...I can no longer sit back and allow communist infiltration, communist indoctrination, communist subversion, and the international communist conspiracy to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids.”

Hmmm, maybe the fluoride kills some good bacteria or other positive biological activity in and around the gums. Would you be willing to give the name of those herbal drops?

‘We’ve added flouride to the water since the 60’s.’

And the opposition was from the John Birch Society and Little Old Ladies in Tennis Shoes, which is why it was a laugh line in ‘Dr. Strangelove’.

Water softeners can be configured to rid incoming water of fluoride, as from wells. But municipalities shouldn’t be adding it. It should be a prescription item from dentists or other licensed physicians.

You mean the John Birch Society was correct?

http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=second-thoughts-on-fluoride

“in part by ridiculing opponents such as the right-wing John Birch Society, which called fluoridation a communist plot to poison America.
