Breaking: Wisconsin's Walker to absent Democrats: 24 hours to return

Reuters) - Wisconsin's Republican Gov. Scott Walker said on Monday that absent senate Democrats have 24 hours to return and vote on a measure to reduce the power of public sector unions or the state will miss out on opportunity to refinance its debt.

"Now they have one day to return to work before the state loses out on the chance to refinance debt, saving taxpayers $165 million this fiscal year," Walker's spokesman Cullen Werwie said in a statement.

"Failure to return to work and cast their votes will lead to more painful and aggressive spending cuts in the very near future," the statement said.

Walker's budget proposal has sparked nationwide protests from labor unions who fear it could be a harbinger of things to come in other states. To balance the state's budget, Walker wants to require public sector employees to pay more for pensions and health care, and to strip their unions of bargaining rights except for wages up to the rate of inflation.

However, those of you who live in Wisconsin GOP districts need to shore up questionable RINO support. Someone just posted on another thread that on their local news, they had heard 4 GOP Senators are thinking of defecting and not supporting the Walker bill. They have not listed the names yet...
1. Anyone know which 4 Senators were likely defectors? I have heard Shultz in Richland Center (wife is a school administrator there) is one.
2 If you live in a GOP Senatorial district, you need to start calling and emailing your Senator to support Walker.

Since in Wisco, Senators geographically serve 3 assembly districts, the most valuable calls will likely come from folks in their districts.

My solution? HOMESCHOOL ALL THE KIDS!! MAKE IT MANDATORY!! (as if this would ever happen ...)

I wish I could make people aware of how ridiculously cheap and simple it is to homeschool, and how it can totally change your life and how you relate to your kids. Even if people just tried it for a year or two ... way less stressful than a private school.

But, alas, most moms work nowadays, and must, to pay the exhorbitant taxes (for the freaking loser public schools which are ineffective). A lot of parents recoil and also state that they could “never” homeschool as their kids would drive them nuts .... sort of sad.

I was shocked to see how many parents were homeschooling in the N. Va area — I have also met the best group of mothers/parents that I could find ANYWHERE in this town through homeschooling.

I personally couldn't have done it....NO, ZIP, NADA patience...
but I admire the ones who do. These kids excel in so many ways.

I would LOVE to see him give them a real deadline and then hire new employees (right-to-work) to take their places and get on with the business of balancing the budget without the hassle. (what a dream!)

According to the State Constitution the Senate can compel attendance AND define the punishment for refusing attendance. What quorum do they need to establish such rules? What other, if any, conditions apply?

I’m not sure; I was only browsing their State Constitution.

Here’s what it says on the matter:
Article IV, Section 7 — Organization of legislature; quorum; compulsory attendance

Each house shall be the judge of the elections, returns and qualifications of its own members; and a majority of each shall constitute a quorum to do business, but a smaller number may adjourn from day to day, and may compel the attendance of absent members in such manner and under such penalties as each house may provide.

So, as you can see they need 50% + one person in order to have a quorum; however, a less-than-quorum *CAN* compel the attendance pf absent members and therefore reach a quorum.

The state doesn’t hire or fire teachers. Keep it real they are hired by local school boards. That is where the next action should occur if people are serious about replacing the teachers.

Yes, there is. The US Senate once sent Sam Giancana to prison for taking the fifth and refusing to testify before a Senate committee even after being given immunity (negating the fifth need). He could only be sent to jail for a year and after being released was hauled back before the committee given the same deal and after the same response was sent back to prison.

Episodes like this only amplify the mistake of taking appointment of Senators by the States and making them elective. This reducing the strength of federalism and makes it much harder for the true interests of the states be represented in the Congress.

Not a good idea such a move has a huge effect even outside the state and jeopardizes its credit too much. Not only that but the GOP would be forever identified with financial irresponsibility.

Not necessarily. What part of this debt is dedicated to specific funds? Employee compensation is typically funded out of non-dedicated funding while capital projects typically come from dedicated funds so if he can refinance a dedicated fund at a lower rate the state saves money.
