Reuters) - Wisconsin's Republican Gov. Scott Walker said on Monday that absent senate Democrats have 24 hours to return and vote on a measure to reduce the power of public sector unions or the state will miss out on opportunity to refinance its debt.
"Now they have one day to return to work before the state loses out on the chance to refinance debt, saving taxpayers $165 million this fiscal year," Walker's spokesman Cullen Werwie said in a statement.
"Failure to return to work and cast their votes will lead to more painful and aggressive spending cuts in the very near future," the statement said.
Walker's budget proposal has sparked nationwide protests from labor unions who fear it could be a harbinger of things to come in other states. To balance the state's budget, Walker wants to require public sector employees to pay more for pensions and health care, and to strip their unions of bargaining rights except for wages up to the rate of inflation.

I’ll believe it when he does it. I would think if today is the deadline then he would have to lay people off at some point today so they do not show up for work tomorrow.
Start the “layoffs” with the Union leaders.
I am not hoping such a bill would pass any more that I want to see line item veto (which I believe the boy king is trying to implement on his own). I live in AZ and we believe in STATES RIGHTS. The framers of America believed the states and locals should control 90% of governments.

There’s got to be a legislative fix for this idiocy so it cannot occur in the future.
At the minimum, states should have EXTRADITION treaties with other states for the return of any fugitive legislators.
Also need to enact procedures for going forward with legislative business with a reduced quorum if fleebagging can be demonstrated.
Yes. If Walker says there will be layoffs if the Flees don’t come back, he must go through with it.
Change the WI constitution so that after three consecutive failures to achieve quorum, the quorum requirement drops to 50%.

I don’t see why a majority can’t rewrite the quorum rules such that legislators who willfully abandon their posts to avoid a vote don’t count toward quorum, i.e. the quorum is reduced by each one that is absent. I realize this practice has a long history, but it’s despicable. It is like the filibuster but worse. I can sort of understand the filibuster-it is like a “jacks to open” rule in poker. But senatorial holds, and the ability to flee strike me as foul play.
Fire them all to prevent seniority issues, like they are doing in Providence, RI.

Sorry, Walker jumped the shark. That recorded phone call was pretty much a torpedo to the boiler room.
I think letting the Dems play this out over a long time frame basically makes the layoffs look like their fault, plus the union bosses are not going to be popular when the layoffs do occur because they've been promising the proles that it won't happen that Walker won't cave.
Playing the long game works to Walker's advantage as more and more people start to really research the issue on the net and bybass the BS fed to them by the media.
When he does drop the hammer there will be no sympathy for the unions or the fleebaggers.
Same here. It sounded a little weak, like "you come back, or, or, or... or else!"
Within the law, I'd love to see him 'pull a Reagan' and summarily fire these public employees, and, within bounds, severely censure or even dismiss the fleebaggers. They aren't doing their jobs, so might as well let someone else. He needs to let them know this will what will happen, and then follow through without hesitation.
