NOAA Begins National Survey of the Economic Contributions of Saltwater Angling
NOAA\ U.S. Department of Commerce ^ | February 22, 2011 | Press Release

Posted on 02/28/2011 7:09:09 AM PST by capecodder

"...NOAA and its state partners will ask anglers how long their fishing trips last and how much they spend on bait, boat fuel, ice, charter fees and other expenses. Anglers will also be asked to participate in a follow-up survey that will ask them to estimate what they spend on durable goods such as boats and fishing tackle used for saltwater angling for the previous 12 months. Those who participate in both parts of the survey will help NOAA produce accurate economic information."

The Magnuson Act of 1976, passed to curtail overfishing by foreign vessels, comes back at The People.

Mandatory salt water fishing licenses, license handling fees, more environmental police, and now "voluntary surveys" conducted by a new cadre of bureaucrats.

New law? No, just new regulations....

Where do you think this is going?

My guess, more fees and taxes on equipment and, ultimately, the "use" of the ocean and the privilege of fishing

Just as the old Washington State Dept of fisheries began to time openings for commercial salmon fishing based on the amount of fish available and the price per pound in order to destroy the commecial fishery, so too will NOAA take that page and apply it to the same end.

Where do you think this is going?

fishing licenses with fish tags...you catch 10 fish, you buy 10 tags...

I'll just go offshore in my boat for a few days, enjoy some fresh seafood, and back to the house....WHAT FISH?

Why? So they can shut it down too, along with oil drilling?

Obama's is getting very close to the worst administration in US history. All he needs is to jail a few political prisoners and I think that will be enough to move him ahead of Wilson.

They work hard at it every day. They take young women who want to make a difference and direct them to an organization and then eat away inside till they piss off the natural leaders and then take control.

Just another move by a government agency to expand its charter to accommodate more employees and more regulation.

Government expands to fill any void in freedom.

The hook line and sinker crowd are not depleting the fish population, its the commercial factory ships that are. A trawler probably brings in 100 times more than the typical party boat. My hometown had about 80 party boats in its heyday, now it isn’t worth taking anyone fishing as the cost of a fare exceeds that which you would spend at a fish market for a couple of pounds of fish. Who wants to pay $40 and only be allowed to keep 2 fish of a certain size or type? Thank God I grew up in a time when there were no factory ships, and there was an abundance of fish close to shore.

Another overreaching federal program just screaming for a massive budget reduction.

I think you’re right. My son is a big fisherman and lives in California - he was actually goint to get into the party boat business, until it started dying because of regulation and the shutting down of fishing (by everybody except the Native Americans, who can overfish to their heart’s delight and sell it abroad).

I live in Florida, and every day they talk about shutting down yet another recreational fishing area or halting even recreational fishing of yet another species, in some cases with absolutely no indication that the supply is endangered in any way.

This is another attempt to control and destroy an industry Florida and California both make (or made) billions off the recreational/sport fishing industry.

A lot of the trawlers are foreign.

Heard on the radio this morning that this is a voluntary survey. We plan to volunteer non-participation.

The stats generated will be just what is needed to legitimize the next step.

More cost, less access, less freedom, growth of government.

There is a proposed "Law" in Southern California that will ban all fishing within 3 miles of the coast the California Marine Life Protection Act The plan adopted Wednesday spans waters from Point Conception to the Mexican border. This will ban surf fishing and all bay fishing if it is allowed to go into affect. Outdoor groups have appealed this bill.

For some reason, Google isn’t helping much with links to your southern CA news.

When you have a minute, would you please post a link or two to some information? If it gets through in CA, other states will be on board. Thanks.

Banning all fishing. Great for the economy, small business, tourism, recreation, feeding the family, and freedom. /s

More gov’t goons chasing kayakers and Boston Whalers with big scary boats. Picture that.

How did the “left” get control of all these foundations/trusts?...

I do not really know. But perhaps it was prior inattention by non-lefties. There is also the fact that until recently non-lefties eschewed joining various Boards and such, leaving the field clear for leftists. Perhaps also the same way lefties gained control of the education system.
