Ugh. Hong Kong's English daily South China Morning Post has a distinctly unsavory dispatch from the Chinese media this morning: Government scientists have released research that millions of acres of Chinese agricultural land and over 12 million tons of Chinese grain are contaminated by toxic metal pollution, according to this week's edition of the China Economic Weekly, a state-run magazine.
Last week, a separate article reported that 10% of Chinese rice contained excess cadmium, a heavy metal known to cause cancer.

Oh, God, there you go... About 10 years ago we went to the "Crawdad Festival" in the N. California Delta. I ordered a big plate of crawdads because I loved them as a kid, back in the Midwest, where my uncles and dad would cook up big batches of them. But the California crawdads, which were supposed to be from the Delta, tasted like crap. I'll bet they were from China. The whole time my wife was looking at me like "You used to like THIS???"

Cadmium poisoning is nasty business You are quite correct.
That said, does anyone suspect that the chinese would "waste" the grain?
I'm guessing that it the Cd will end up in various exported foods, perhaps after being fed to livestock or by being diluted with uncontaminated grain so the Cd levels are lower, but still measurable.
Oh, and if the rice is contaminated, what about wheat? (IIRC, china exports a lot of wheat gluten, etc.)

Very useful, thanks.
Cherry, I’m glad you commented. Good job, thanks.

The plastic rumor is about them “cutting” the product so they dont waste the contaminated rice.
Fold in enough filler so that the stuff doesnt seem so toxic.

You are welcome. I didn’t sort out union from non-union products so there may still be some chaff there.

It didnt seem quite right. I looked at the sack and it was from China! A couple of supermarkets got caught in *Louisiana* trying to sell that crap. It hit the fan big time in the news.

I cooked them right too, with corn on the cob, red taters and Zatarains pro boil II. Try and save a few of them taters and the next day make potato salad with them. So good you would fight your grandma over them.

Give me the SKU and I can find it for you.
That’s why they put SKUs on everything in the first place. If you’ve spent any time working with them, it’s not that hard to figure out.
Or just ask any inventory company!
