Not to defend Graham, but what is wrong with this statement?

Do you disagree that borders need to be secured FIRST, before even discussing anything else?

This is what he said:

"Stepping up border security must be approved by Congress first before a guest-worker program and a legal status for the 10 million to 12 million undocumented people already living in the United States can be debated, U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said in San Antonio on Friday.

we know where light in the loafers gramnesty and mcamnesty stand, they can talk all they want we know which way they will vote, and thats for amnesty.

We can’t afford and amnesty and its resultant drag on our resources. Mexico has the best economy in 10 years, let them go home along with OTM’s (other than Mexicans).

No debate is necessary, we are broke.

This statement on it’s own is not terrible per say, but we ALL KNOW that Lindsey is an Amnesty queen - his statements on this topic are LEGION. Therefore I think it is entirely appropriate to hold this statement up to scrutiny.

We know the meaning of his statement—he’s pro-amnesty and that’s for approximately 30 million illegal immigrants, not 10-12 million.

No. You have to do everything you can including defunding any benefits, jobs; etc. while putting up the fence.

Not to defend Graham, but what is wrong with (his) statement?

If negotiating is an essential skill for a politician, then Graham clearly fails. By recognizing legalization as an issue he has included it in the present debate. Indeed, the first point to be negotiated now will be the word "before" in his statement. What possible value is there in including in one's view the opponents favorite issue unless one is willing to recognize it and is prepared to talk about it?

Security and legalization are two separate issues and it is unwise and unnecessary to frame a debate that includes both of them. By doing so he has awkwardly set the table in his opponent's favor.

Re-read the sentence you posted. He says LEGISLATION to secure the border must be passed before passing LEGISLATION on amnesty.....not that the border has to actually be secured and proven secured before event taking up any further action. Graham is a weasel word-smith. Don't fall for it.
