Reports: 12 Russian police wounded in Islamist attack on Caucasus province

Russian media say 12 police were wounded during an Islamist attack on a provincial capital in the volatile Caucasus region.

The Itar Tass news agency said Friday militants launched grenades on a regional security agency, a hospital and a hotel in Nalchik, the capital of the Kabardino-Balkariya province. No one was wounded in the attack, it said.

Maybe the Russians are smarter than I, but given the problems they have with radical Muslims within their borders and the Muslim former soviet states on their borders, I can’t understand why they support Iran so much.

I’ve wondered about that too, and if Iran being Shiite-central rather than Sunni, like those calling for one independent emirate in the Caucasus, would explain it. I don’t know. I don’t think they’re particularly good allies with Iran, or with China for that matter, just that they are willing to cooperate on strategic interests even if it’s a string of temporary alliances.

Different strains of Islamic beliefs between Iran and the Chechens. Same goes for the Muslim Brotherhood vs Al Qaeda.
