Global warming rate could be halved by controlling 2 pollutants, U.N. study says

The projected rise in global temperatures could be cut in half in coming years if world governments focused on reducing emissions of two harmful pollutants - black carbon and ground-level ozone, including methane - rather than carbon dioxide alone, according to a U.N. study released Wednesday.

The study, "Integrated Assessment of Black Carbon and Tropospheric Ozone,"(PDF) by the U.N. Environment Programme, shows the impact that the two short-lived pollutants have on the environment, compared with carbon dioxide, which can stay in the atmosphere for decades.

"I think what this study does that hasn't been done in the past is look at the contributions to global warming by gases with short lifetimes," said Steve Seidel, vice president of policy analysis for the Pew Center on Global Climate Change...

"You get to keep below these critical temperatures," said Durwood Zaelke, president and founder of the Institute for Governance & Sustainable Development.

The study is aimed at local pollution control officials in municipalities worldwide, particularly in developing nations such as China, India, Brazil and South Africa. Scientists and activists have started to focus on reducing short-lived greenhouse gases in these areas in part because leaders have failed to reach a broader agreement to curb carbon dioxide, global warming's biggest contributor.

Global depression and chaos could be halved by controlling (or getting rid of) 2 pollutants--UN and environmentalists.

I thought the “science was settled”...

Much of “science” committed suicide when they put politics above science.

Here we go again, kiddies! Are we really going to have to go through this crap again? Somebody please clue these dolts in that ozone is created by, the sun! Isn’t it ironic that the “ozone holes” were such a bad thing? Nevermind the fact that the “ozone holes” were nothing more than thining of the ozone layer at the northern polar area in the winter and the souther polar region in the summer. Remember this now kiddies, what is lacking at both places at the same time the ozone layer thins; that’s right, sunshine!

They are referencing ‘ground level ozone’, not ozone in the upper atmosphere that protects us......

During some cold days in the 1930’s, in St. Louis, there was so much coal soot in the air, during those days, that street lights had to be turned on because it was so dark. Some how we survived and prospered, and the average life expectancy has continued to rise.

CO2 - Carbon Dioxide is NOT a pollutant ... CO2 is a natural byproduct of respiration in nature... Humans and all mammals expel CO2 after processing oxygen... Plants expel Oxygen after processing CO2... a natural recycling process...

If there is too much CO2 in our atmosphere from time to time it is most often due to volcanoes ...

CO2 as a cause of Global Warming - IF Global Warming Existed is a silly hypothesis...

Ground level ozone is created by electricity.

I guess to save the planet we will have to eliminate electric cars.
