WASHINGTON (AP) -- Former President Bill Clinton on Thursday warned farmers not to use so much corn for ethanol fuel that it leads to higher food prices and riots in poor countries.

Clinton told farmers and Agriculture Department employees that he believes producing biofuels such as corn-based ethanol is important for reducing U.S. dependence on foreign oil.

Why do farmers use so much food for fuel, anyway? Did perhaps someone encourage them?

Has it occurred to this idiot that maybe the market will determine what farmers do with their corn? And that it’s the subsidies that had corn being turned into ethanol?

The farmers sell their corn to the highest bidder......
Tell this to the government that just approved to extend the subsides for ethanol-————again.

Is Clinton predicting that people will start drinking it instead of putting it in their fuel tanks?

How does the government granting a tax credit to oil companies prevent farmers from selling their corn to the highest bidder?

I never have understood the hysteria over the food to ethanol thing. They use the starch from #2 field corn to make ethanol and the pulp from that is used for cattle food as is most of the rest of that crop. We export about 25% of it for cattle food in other countries and use maybe 10% of it here for fructose syrup and a few other edible commodities. Fully 70+% of the crop goes to feed livestock here. We aren’t talking about the stuff they put into cans -that’s sweet corn and comprises maybe a million acres of the 90 million acres that is planted in corn.

I very much dislike ethanol as a fuel because of the low energy efficiency and other problems it causes but , hey, it ain’t fueling world hunger. Bubba needs to get a hobby..

Am I to understand that Clinton takes a shot at farmers, but does not mention the extensive programs by the Feds and some states to push and finance ethanol plants?

An even better idea, save corn for food and meat production and DRILL FOR OIL EVERYWHERE IN THIS COUNTRY! Even the state-sponsored reporters at CNBC had a chart this morning that showed the USA with 800 billion barrels of surplus oil, compared with 200 billion for Saudi Arabia. That is a conservative number and doesn’t count coal to oil technology and recent shale oil finds that are just coming on line. There is no excuse for letting commodity speculators make U.S. consumers suffer in order to fatten their accounts.

The biggest waste is the amount of water required to produce the stuff.
