Sketching out a worst-case scenario of San Jose's budget meltdown, city officials warned this week that they could lay off as many as 349 police officers and 145 firefighters, slashing close to a quarter of the city's public safety employees.

The city is also looking at millions of dollars in other cuts, including shutting off neighborhood

streetlights for much of the night and eliminating some gang-prevention programs.

There has never been a major layoff of police officers in the city's modern history. But last year San Jose laid off 49 firefighters, and this is the second year in a row the Police Department has faced layoffs.

Water and Sewer services are usually rife with nepotism hires, that are unnecessary. They systems usually run themselves with little human intervention until repairs are necessary and that can be contracted.................

Government, when threatened, turns itself inside out.

The muscle and bone migrate to the surface, so as to prevent harm to the precious fat within.

San Jose PD is the most anti-gun LEO department in California, even moreso than other CA cities that you think would be extremely anti-RKBA.

Their former police chief was for years a Brady Campaign mouthpiece who was used on their fundraising letters, in uniform. Any time that the Brady campaign needed on the spot 'facts' about crime to support their hysterical claims, the chief was only too willing to help repeat whatever they told him to say. They've also had incidents where gun owners with perfectly legal CA-compliant rifles have been harassed and charged with crimes after the San Jose police department crime lab has altered those firearms to be 'illegal', and many thousands of dollars later the San Jose DA had to drop the trumped-up charges.

Layoffs couldn't be happening to those more deserving.

Today, if you imposed a middle class life style, diet, economy of say even 1950 upon an American, he’d cry poverty.

BTTT, +100, and all that other thread stuff.

America has champagne tastes in consumption, but a lite beer economic base. So we borrow and borrow and borrow...

Life is like a box of chocolates. Except in California where you always know what you are going to get. Bloated Socialist feel good programs they can’t afford.

And not a single secretary in the community youth development program will be touched.

The commies think that by cutting those services most fundamental to local government that they can coerce the citizenry into tax hikes.

They should know two things: We're on to them...and those cops are a hell of a lot more important to them than they are to us.

I would too. I was meaning, with the way they are living now, there is no money to sustain that type of pay/benefits.

I’d rather they keep the streetlights and dispense with
the services for illegals. Those lights are helpful
when riding a motorcycle - I’m sure the budget cuts
will target Caltrans and the employees won’t be picking
up road debris as much as before.

Things they should be cutting should target all the ‘programs’ that provide the necessities of life for people who should be paying their own way.

WA provides a sh!tload of bennies for the migrant laborors
and the ‘pure’ which put that state into the hole.

Agreed. I was just saying that with the way they are living now, with the pay and benefits they receive, there is no money to keep that up.

Ah you must be referring to Chief McNamara.

No cops and no concealed carry. I am job hunting
and I’ve crossed CA off my list altogether. At
least I can keep my firearms in Kokomo or Waukesha
or even Redmond.

but Dave Ramsey says keep putting money in your 401's....no matter what....

I don't believe that slow saving over time is the way to "wealth" or "critical mass".....mutual funds are manipulated and cd's pay nothing....

the worker/saver is toast.....

“....... they cut essential services to “teach” the insolent public a lesson.”

It’s called the “Firemen First” tactic. So transparent.

See the link at post 54. As far as I’m concerned, they SHOULD cut fire-pigs first. They are WAY overcompensated for what they do.

Well, some of saving later, when you need it is better( less worse ? ) then having no savings at all.

I don’t know what to tell you, other than the common man is under assault from all directions.

It sucks, but it is that.

Oh that is certainly true.

Threads like this make me so incredibly happy that I moved my family to the country, in anticipation of everything falling apart. All services in the city nearest to me could fail, and we would be fine.

Just imagine living in one of these cities. Cops gone, lights out, Katrina will look like kindergarten.

Cut what ever needs to be cut, but it is interesting how it’s always the police, fire fighters and teachers first. Wonder if they are playing on the public fears? /sar

Bet you I could find all kinds of things to cut.

Bingo. Isn’t San Jose a Lefty haven anyway? What are they doing with a police department in the first place then? They don’t want to arrest people who are damaged by society. They don’t want people sent to prison. They don’t want murderers executed. They want to do any damned thing they please, and turn the place into the ideal communist paradise.

Let’s give the Lefty dogma a chance to shine for once.

Don’t just lay off a quarter of the police. Lay them all off.

Then the rest of the nation can see what a real “worker’s paradise” looks like.

You guys completely nailed it. A while ago, someone posted here a complete list of all the state of California government departments and programs. It was mind-boggling, departments like the Blueberry Commission and Dept. of Prenatal Care and crap. CA is screwed.
