Providence To Teachers: You're Fired
Business Insider ^ | 02/23/2011 | John Ellis

The Providence Journal of Rhode Island reports that the Providence school district "plans to send out dismissal notices to every one of its 1,926 teachers, an unprecedented move that has union leaders up in arms." The paper continues:

In a letter sent to all teachers Tuesday, Supt. Tom Brady wrote that the Providence School Board on Thursday will vote on a resolution to dismiss every teacher, effective the last day of school.

In an e-mail sent to all teachers and School Department staff, Brady said, “We are forced to take this precautionary action by the March 1 deadline given the dire budget outline for the 2011-2012 school year in which we are projecting a near $40 million deficit for the district,” Brady wrote. “Since the full extent of the potential cuts to the school budget have yet to be determined, issuing a dismissal letter to all teachers was necessary to give the mayor, the School Board and the district maximum flexibility to consider every cost savings option, including reductions in staff.” State law requires that teachers be notified about potential changes to their employment status by March 1.

“To be clear about what this means,” Brady wrote, “this action gives the School Board the right to dismiss teachers as necessary, but not all teachers will actually be dismissed at the end of the school year.”

Providence faces a $57 million budget deficit this year and expects an even larger budget deficit next year.

I have no doubt it’s the union thuggery tactics (including collective bargaining) that got them to this point. It’s no different up here - we pay through the nose for these educators and every year they give less and less.

If the kids are out of school for a month or six months, it won’t hurt a thing. It will put pressure on the parents so they may change things in the schools. Something has to give but the unions won’t even give an inch.

“Teachers’ are thick on the ground in America. At all the Universities, they are handing out ‘teaching’ degrees like popcorn.

Most of them are dumb as dirt anyway, totally replaceable!!!!

Collectively Bargain-Binned right out the door...

Makes room for more appropriate items, seasonally-taxed adjusted.

If no one can afford your items - stores shut down and the inventory gets sent to the $1dollar stores.

If management doesn’t do a corporate about face - it’s over.

Hey - They're protesting to keep their welfare freebies everywhere else. They can't have both. It's not their money.
I guess now they'll have to get real jobs. They'll have to work all year like everyone else.
Good thing they have their union to cover their backs, huh?

“Providence To Teachers: You’re Fired”

They are not fired. Just given notice. This is done in most districts. What is different in this case is that all the teachers got notices. Normally, some nominal number get notices and only a fraction of those are terminated.

I never even considered being a teacher until I found out they were making over $100,000++, have full benefits, have a full retirement, work less than 10 months a year, and can never be fired.

No wonder I keep hearing the term ‘Lottery Job’, when people talk about a union or government job. It really is like winning the freakin’ lottery.

The Gravy Train has been derailed.
The taxpayers are done. Not mad not pissed just done.
Its over. Taxpayer piad employees rode the gravy train for the past 30 years and now will have to come back down to earth with the rest of us.
You will be paid for the work you do.
You do it well you should be paid well. You do it poorly you should be looking for another job.
The days of lazy and inept teachers keeping jobs because of unions is coming to the end. The cliff is rapidly approaching!

If all of the teachers were laid off at the end of this school term, would the union be paying to cover any salary they received over the summer, as well as their insurance payments? Wouldn’t that be a kick in the pants to their coffers? lol

The teachers have long answered to the unions and the Federal Dept of Education.
Its time they answer to those that pay the wage, the taxpayers, the parents.

The funny thing is that most school districts spend more on non-teaching staff than on teachers. Getting rid of the worthless counselors, shrinks, assistant superintendants, assistants to the assistant superintendants... etc., would solve the problem easily. Unfortunately in any bureaucratic system the most worthless people are the most protected.

Hey guys. Go easy on the “thug” and “parasite” comments. What we are witnessing is an era where the public sector is being downsized. The process is different than when the private sector does the same. Draconian measures are now required because there is no “natural” way for government entities to take care of economic contractions. Therefore, by the time the politicians intervene things can be rather dire.

The absurdity of the process should provide a cautionary tale of why government should provide no service which is not absolutely necessary.

Meanwhile, a lot of the teachers affected are neither “thugs” nor “parasites”. They are teachers attempting to do their jobs.
