PROVIDENCE The school district plans to send out dismissal notices to every one of its 1,926 teachers, an unprecedented move that has union leaders up in arms.
In a letter sent to all teachers Tuesday, Supt. Tom Brady wrote that the Providence School Board on Thursday will vote on a resolution to dismiss every teacher, effective the last day of school.
In an e-mail sent to all teachers and School Department staff, Brady said, We are forced to take this precautionary action by the March 1 deadline given the dire budget outline for the 2011-2012 school year in which we are projecting a near $40 million deficit for the district, Brady wrote. Since the full extent of the potential cuts to the school budget have yet to be determined, issuing a dismissal letter to all teachers was necessary to give the mayor, the School Board and the district maximum flexibility to consider every cost savings option, including reductions in staff. State law requires that teachers be notified about potential changes to their employment status by March 1.
To be clear about what this means, Brady wrote, this action gives the School Board the right to dismiss teachers as necessary, but not all teachers will actually be dismissed at the end of the school year.
This is beyond insane, Providence Teachers Union President Steve Smith said Tuesday night. Lets create the most chaos and the highest level of anxiety in a district where teachers are already under unbelievable stress. Now I know how the United States State Department felt on Dec. 7 , 1941. That was the day the Japanese government bombed Pearl Harbor.

Saving
Cut this fool some slack. We all know that teachers are underpaid, overworked and under-appreciated. They constantly tell us so. How can someone who “works” about 8 months each year, has interminable holidays, teacher days and sick days, has free “cadillac” health insurance, has tenure, can retire at any age, earns more than most people and has a loser, education degree gripe? What a total self-centered putz. This guy is afraid the hard-working homeowners won’t be shoveling him more slop at his trough. Tough luck, you commie freak.
I always like an good and ACCURATE rant.. makes the weather seem a little warmer. thanks

Government. The highest cost, lowest quality of antiquated goods and services provided poorly, broken and late.
roger that
Judge in D.C. ordered fired teachers to receive back pay.
CA Courts demanded that there be NO furloughs, no layoffs, etc.
NY Courts disallowed the Governor to layoff, furlough, or cut pay.
The unions rush into Court and they win!
Damn the taxpayer.
Main reason they are such a bad idea - kind of like a President with too much power.
Mr Blutarsky was awesome! He went on to be a Senator too.
Actually, unions are best known for enriching existing members at the expense of new members.
I, too, was teacher and I found that for most long term teachers it is not a difficult job. Those that try to perform their duties to a satisfactory level soon burn out and quit.
I did and I assume you did too.
LMAO!
I did and I assume you did too.*
I always try to do a good job wherever I work.
Most of my teachers that I had when I was a student were good, but that was decades ago and the work ethic hadn't eroded away yet.
;-)
I did have one remarkably lazy professor.
Someone asked him a question in a technology class. He refused to give an answer to the class. He said, “That's in the book.”
He didn't lecture, he would only read out of the book.
One day a student said, “We could sit up there and do that, read out of the book.”
I imagine they have more teachers like him now-days in the public schools....
