Italy says 1,000 killed in Libya unrest

Wed Feb 23, 2011 6:26am EST

TRIPOLI, Feb 23 - Muammar Gaddafi's increasingly desperate attempts to crush a revolt against his four-decade rule have killed as many as 1,000 people and split Libya, Italy's Foreign Minister said on Wednesday.

As countries with strong business ties to Africa's third largest oil producer scrambled to evacuate their citizens, and fear of pro-Gaddafi gunmen emptied the streets of the capital Tripoli, France became the first state to call for sanctions.

"I would like the suspension of economic, commercial and financial relations with Libya until further notice," President Nicolas Sarkozy said.

But in the latest sign of international division over how to deal with Gaddafi, the prime minister of Qatar said he did not want to isolate Libya, where several senior officials have declared their backing for protests that began about a week ago.

Why can’t Obama just go over there and talk to these people? Surely he could reason with them and bring this to a peaceful end. We all know that people around the world have the same goals. Obama could take along his Nobel Peace Prize to show his credentials. Visualize world peace!

A dictator uses his personal bodyguard, the army and secret police to suppress dissent in his country.. What a novel idea, I wonder why no one thought of this before. ( Say DOHHH to the news media please)

A Mexican official, when asked how many students were killed during the riots in 1968 at the time Mexico was to host the Olympics, replied, “It doesn’t matter how many died. We would have killed as many as we needed to kill.” Some government officials and leaders take a really hard line about things. And, the Mexican government nor officials of that government never really ever saw any punishment for those actions or attitudes. Sometimes, folks, life just sucks.

I was led to believe that the old man was letting his son take more and more of the leadership role. It was the son who led the negotiations to end the nuclear program of Libya (and some think Iraq), to develop the Man made River project, to begin a process of bringing in Euro business and developing a significant if not major financial center.

That is, there is major change in process for the better. It seems the opposition is against this change, not the old ways of the old man.

Poser in Chief is Awol again on this, his defender Juannie Williams on the All Stars claiming he can't say anything because we have people there.

So does Britain and many others who are criticizing them and we also had people in Egypt.

Obastard condemns our ally in Egypt and and publicly calls for him to step down while the Madman of Libya, who has hated the US for over 40 years, imports mercenaries from other countries to indiscriminately shoot people in the street and Obastard remains silent.

Does anyone but me see anything wrong with this picture?
