Madison public schools will be closed Monday for the fourth straight day, amid major demonstrations at the Capitol.
So many teachers have called in sick in recent days, to protest GOP Gov. Scott Walker's controversial budget repair bill, that Madison schoolchildren were told to stay home last Wednesday through Friday.
Numerous districts around the state, including the state's largest, the Milwaukee Public Schools, also were closed at various points last week.
Teachers, other public employees, and their supporters are outraged by the measure in Walker's bill, which would strip public workers of most of their collective bargaining rights. They call it an attack on unions.
Walker insists the move is needed to help balance the state's budget.
The closure of Madison schools Monday comes despite a call Sunday by the statewide teachers' union, the Wisconsin Education Association Council, for teachers to report to classrooms.
Piss off the kids, too. They have to make those days up in summer school.
I am no expert on collective bargaining, but from what I do know it isn’t the collective bargaining that is the problem.
The problem is with politicians who cannot say no because they are afraid the Unions will vote En Masse against them when they run for office. So they vote raises and perks to buy Union votes.
Maybe they should just grow a pair and learn to just say no.
FIRE THEM ALL!
You bet, fire them!
Actually, I wish that the Governor would take a page from Regan and just fire the lot of them. Bring in non-union teachers to fill the slots. This would be the best outcome for all of this union action.
Not sure if there are enough unemployed teachers out there to fill the slots, but wouldn’t it be nice to try...
At least, it might not happen again...
You lucky dog! Hawaiineed I say more?
Gee Madison and milwaukee have a tiny bit of snow falling down (12 inches with freezing rain, sleet and ice mixed in for good measure). so more days off for the kiddies. Please note on february 22 SEIU is scheduled to show up for protests in Madison. Keep the kiddies away from these thugs - people will be getting hurt in Madison.
You read that right, Patton. They ARE dolts in some cases. I’ve lost one teacher friend over this whole thing...never realized how willfully ignorant she really is!
*Scratches Head* You THINK you know people...and yet they STILL disappoint you!
Don’t believe the all the travel literature. The climate is great, but.....
kids just won’t be brainwashed for a day
Thank you! The People of Wisconsin HAVE spoken. Just because we have two counties (Dane & Milwakee) full of Commies doesn’t meant the rest of the state has gone insane! :)
Another race to watch is our Dane County Executive race. I’m betting you dollars to donuts that Eileen will win. Again, a REPUBLICAN elected in a totally BLUE county!

The tide HAS turned in Wisconsin. Watch other ‘purple-ish’ states to follow... :)
Diana, so interesting to hear from the Lion’s Den. Thanks for your feedback on this. We in CA certainly are tired of them, but they seem to be so self-righteous, I was thinking maybe some were buying it. Glad to hear everyone’s sick of them.
Q: is a school voucher/choice bill a budget item?
If not, it sounds like a good time to pass that bill.
Big time.
That’s wonderful to hear. I am so proud of you guys.
To “Deagle” who wonders if there’s enough unemployed
teachers out there ... enough and more. The question
should be “How does one encourage an unemployed teacher
not to rent that van and truck to WI right now”?
.
I am going to skip school on Monday if it snows!
Tuesday it will be snowing again!
Deja Vu all over again!
.
Wayward politicians can’t be fired, just voted out.
