I was hoping Dale, Jr. would win on the 10th Anniversary of his father's death and had a chance until 1st Green, White, Checker.
But what a story that a 20 year old rookie wins the Super Bowl on his 1st attempt!
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) Dale Earnhardt Jr. insisted he didn't believe in fairy tales and happy endings.
Trevor Bayne was too young to know any better.
Bayne, in just his second Sprint Cup Series start, pulled off a stunning victory in his first Daytona 500 on Sunday, becoming the youngest winner in the 53 years of the Great American Race. Bayne, who turned 20 the day before the biggest race of his career, took the Wood Brothers back to Victory Lane for the first time since 2001.
Ahhh...
I had heard of the sub 4 second runs...I just figured the cars were faster and the tires were gripping better.
Now I know.
3 time-WORLD karting champion? That requires some real $$$. Are you sure? I thought as of 2010 - Lake Speed was the only American to ever do it.
One of the greatest stories no one ever heard of was how Lake Speed won the World Karting Championship in 1978 beating future F1 champion Ayrton Senna.
Senna had the big bucks and Speed was on a budget of peanuts. Lake somehow befriended Italian Teo Fabi and his brother.
Teo’s brother was eliminated but he gave Lake his kart tires. Those tires and Lake’s driving helped him beat Senna.

“I think Carl Edwards got the word to get behind that kid and make sure he won.”
I doubt that, Carl is too nasty a piece of work. The kid won it fair and square. Junior and Kyle are also the world’s biggest whiners, so I’m glad they got hung out to dry.
C’mon Jimmie, get back in the game!!

“Breaking News”?????
Awesome!
Bayne’s Victory Lane interview was great. It was easy to tell he was totally gobsmacked that he’d pulled it off, and it’s great to see a driver thanking God and thanking his crew and owners even before thanking the sponsors! This kid is like the anti-Kyle Busch.
Near the end of the interview the reporterette says something like “and the King is here to congratulate you” and the camera pulled back to a shot of Richard Petty in Victory Lane. You can faintly hear Bayne yell “ARE YOU KIDDING ME?” when she said that. :)
And how fantastic is it to see that #21 back up front. I’ve always loved the Wood Brothers since the days of David Pearson (my second favorite driver as a kid, behind Petty). It’s great to see the pride of Stuart, Virginia #1 at Daytona for the first time in 35 years.

Watch the tape...
The kid was smart...
The other pair were coming up fast on the inside, the kid dove down, got in front of them, and stayed in front for the win.
I see a full year of Motorcraft racing with this kid come next week. It’s too good of a PR deal for Ford to pass up on.
Show us the birth certificate!
me too. Gibbs all the way but this was a good shot in the arm instead of looking at Martin’s geezer face or Johnson’s arrogant mug at every shot. The sport does need new blood and boy, did it deliver.
Great pic of one very serious competitor!
Two things we thought were funny after he won....as he is doing victory burnouts his guy in the pits comes on the radio and says, “Hey if you want to go spin in the grass it’s ok too”! Great....then he gets LOST trying to find victory lane. you can hear him on the radio saying, “Which way do I go?”.
Great he won without wrecking. He thought he’d just be pushing people all day. Good for him.
Yes - beat Jeff Gordon's prior standard by FIVE years. Wasn't even close.
And thanks to NASCAR’s (see Brian “Frenchie” France) new rule that forces drivers to pick only one series to receive points from, Bayne get’s 0 points for winning the sports biggest race. Why? He didn’t have a full time ride in Sprint Cup, so he went with the Nationwide series where he did have a full season lined up. The new rule was supposed to help the less experienced drivers, but ended up burning Bayne. How crazy is it that the Daytona 500 winner is not eligible to earn any Sprint Cup points this entire season? I swear, Brian France is so shallow, sometimes he makes Obama look competent.
Thats when I stopped watching and following at all. Back when Bill elliot and his aero Ford were faster than lightening and crushing everybody...
The Rule of Unintended Consequences rears its ugly head.
I know, Can you imagine some dude calling the Wood Brothers a “third rate organization” ??? As if watching some Beer, Viagra or Fast Food sponsored car is what anyone wants to see. . . . Good for the Red, White and Gold numbered “21” ( The David Pearson car) take a 20 year old kid to Victory Lane.
Just kidding folks but Bayne DID save Nascar's ass with that win after one of the most disastrous weeks in racin history while the race mafia preaches cutting costs for teams
The Daytona 500 was MUCH different this year with the new surface.
“Same with drag racing.”
“+1, I used to go the Nats in Ennis every year but 1000 feet just ain’t the same kind of drag racing. Drop the nitro percentage down or something, but drag racing was born to be 1320 feet.”
You got that right! I used to go to the Big Go every year but not lately. And that STUPID countdown to the championship or whatever it’s called...just lame.
