I was hoping Dale, Jr. would win on the 10th Anniversary of his father's death and had a chance until 1st Green, White, Checker.
But what a story that a 20 year old rookie wins the Super Bowl on his 1st attempt!
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) Dale Earnhardt Jr. insisted he didn't believe in fairy tales and happy endings.
Trevor Bayne was too young to know any better.
Bayne, in just his second Sprint Cup Series start, pulled off a stunning victory in his first Daytona 500 on Sunday, becoming the youngest winner in the 53 years of the Great American Race. Bayne, who turned 20 the day before the biggest race of his career, took the Wood Brothers back to Victory Lane for the first time since 2001.
If you ain’t cheatin’ you ain’t tryin’. LOL
Amen, brother.
On both types of racing.
I used to love the pro drags, but now I follow the IHRA rather than the NHRA.
Yeah, Smokey was my hero too. Remember when he came out with the 7/8 scale Chevelle and beat the big boys! Ingenious!
Took ‘em awhile to realize it.
I’m just damn proud to see the number 21 back in victory lane.
“Geez, just yesterday he was a teenager. Hes #5 in Nationwide series points and now has won The Greatest Race!”
Yea, too bad he’s not responsible enough to celebrate by having a beer.
(probably cannot even do beer endorsements)
One time, Smokey made an exact duplicate of the stock car he was supposed to be racing. Except it was like 15/16s the size of the real car. Lighter. Then he would grind all the body panels thinner. Lighter. Those were the days!
7/8ths. Yeah, I think you’re right! I posted that it was 15/16ths. But I do believe you’re correct. What a guy! Made racing so much fun! Wonder if he’s got a bio? I’ll have to look, cuz I’d like to read it!
Actually, the Wood Bros. just proved that they’re neither 3rd rate nor has beens. Thge 21 car was well prepared and ran strong all week. Your comment, however, proves that you’re not even a 10th rate fan.

“Yeah, Smokey was my hero too.”
And he had that bizarre, little, black-lacquered cowboy hat! Too cool for school!
Id say give him the keys to the family car and a bottle of Jack Daniels after THAT run, LOL!
A lot of drivers are saying the same thing (about the quality of restrictor plate racing). Guess they don’t know what they are talking about. In any case, real racing starts next week at Pheonix.
At the start of the race, when they were talking about how Gordon liked teaming up with Trevor, my wife (a very casual fan) asked why he would pick such an experienced driver. I said Gordon must see something in him or Trevor is the only driver that would work with him (LOL!). Anyway, she started rooting for him. All night now I keep hearing, “see, told ya.”
I’m happy for the kid and didn’t think he had a prayer with one to go and him in the lead. That NEVER happens.
[This tandem racing is/was a bunch of cr@p.]
I concur. When an end is put to this tandem business, NASCAR will vastly improve. Until then, I have no interest in watching or supporting the sport.
Smokey also showed up at the beginning of a season with a hand-made 7/8 Chevrolet. It was beautiful workmanship.
Everyone was walking all around it & trying to figure out what was different.
When it was parked on the pit road next to a real Chevrolet, the jig was up. Smokey held to his guns & said—find in the rule book where I cannot do this.
That started the templates for every kind of car brought to NASCAR races.
The kid also brought a car to the finish line UNDAMAGED.
Get rid of the trailer racing and get rid of the car to car radios.
This was the most boring NASCAR race ever.
Took the wood brothers back to victory lane at Daytona for the first time since David pearson won in 1976.35 YEARS AGO!Ford won first second and third place.OUTSTANDING!
FWIW Bayne has been competing for 15 yrs.
The kid started in karts @ 5 yrs old, was a 3-time world karting champion, Hooters Pro Cup ROY @ 15, and a DEI development driver @ 17.
So while this is a Cinderella story to some extent, he’s really the product of a carefully crafted career plan.
I believe he even did his last 2 yrs of high school on line so he could devote more time to driving.
I think Carl Edwards got the word to get behind that kid and make sure he won. That toyota would have surely hung him out to dry.I am just so tickled FORD WON and did it one, two, three.
That was amazing in itself.
