WASHINGTON – Few memories haunt Republicans more deeply than the 1995-96 partial shutdown of the federal government, which helped President Bill Clinton reverse his falling fortunes and recast House Republicans as stubborn partisans, not savvy insurgents.
Now, as Congress careens toward a budget impasse, government insiders wonder if another shutdown is imminent — and whether Republicans again would suffer the most blame.
Leaders of both parties say they are determined to avoid a shutdown. But they have not yielded on the amount of spending cuts they will demand or accept. Meanwhile, shutdown talk is rippling through Washington and beyond.
The Obama administration is warning that workers who handle Social Security benefits might be furloughed. Almost hourly, top Democrats and Republicans accuse each other of pushing the government to the brink by being inflexible.

The House will pass a bill to keep the government running with a tiny reduction in spending. Only the Democrats can shut down the government.
Haunt? they called Clinton’s bluff and set the stage for balanced budgets just a few years later.

This is not 1995. The American people voiced their opinion in November 2010 that they want government spending reduced now. This country is bankrupt.

The only thing bad about shutting down government was that they gave them retroactic pay when they went back to work!
Shut everything down for a couple of months with no pay!!!

Asking such a question is as foolish as asking whether there's any truth in Pravda - the answer is known before the question is even asked.

Of course Obama and Dems will split blame, leaving Repubs with majority of blame.

Another dimension to the 1995 impasse was paid advertising. The dems were on the air with a national advertising campaign blaming the radical Republicans. The RNC was late responding. That was a calculated decision; the RNC was building a warchest for the elections and chose not to try to match the dems' tv budget.
What no one realized initially was that the dems were paying for it all with soft dollars, which was patently illegal, and that Clinton had launched the wholesale White House fundraising campaign that later became notorious. This was when all the funny money stuff began. But that's all hindsight. This time around, I would expect the GOP to go toe-to-toe on the airwaves.

In fact I remember it as a good thing that got Bill Clinton to go along wiht the GOP and finally BALANCE THE BUDGET!!!!

I'm not going with that, per se...I and those that I know are totally disgusted with billions going to big banks, the IMF, bailouts for Freddie Mack and Fannie May, and our manufacturing moving to China...
Yes, I object to governizing the private sector...But now we're facing another dilema...The half a million workers a week who are losing their jobs need financial help...
I can see the Republicans throwing them under the bus while doing nothing to get the work back into the U.S. of A. all in the name of smaller gov't...

Bring it on, AP. In 1995 there was no such thing as Fox News. Matt Drudge was selling souvenirs in the CBS store in Los Angeles. Only geeks had Internet accounts and no one had ever heard the word "blog." So when Bill Clinton vetoed the continuing resolution to keep the government running, you and your fellow partisan Democrat liars in the press were able to con the American people into believing that "the Republicans shut down the government."
