Gun lobby stands firm in opposing Obama's ATF nominee

WASHINGTON — Andrew Traver, nominated to lead the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, faces a powerful foe on the road to Senate approval: the National Rifle Association.

Traver, 47, who has been praised for his work against Chicago area's street gangs, has led the ATF in Illinois since 2004. Both Illinois senators have applauded President Barack Obama's choice; so have law enforcement officials.

Obama nominated Traver in November, triggering strong opposition from the NRA,

Gun Owners of America, the Second Amendment Foundation, the National Sport Shooting Foundation, Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership, Citizens' Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms and many other groups also oppose Traver's nomination. A person this hostile to the Constitution should never be in government service.

The NRA is not a “gun lobby”. A lobby is a group that represents a given industry. The National Sport Shooting Foundation represents gunmakers, and is “the gun lobby”. The NRA is a grassroots group of millions of Americans. Nobody calls the AARP the “social security lobby”. And “gun lobby” is not shorter than “NRA” in a headline, so it is only used for propaganda purposes because of the negative connotation of the word lobby.

The Chicago Police are on their own against the street gangs. The ATF does sh*t and the Cook Cook States Attorney turns over fewer cases for Federal Firearm Prosecutions than anywhere in the USA. (I hear that Gang members relatives vote.)

The CPD is also 3K-5K undermanned, equipment doesn't work - from Patrol Cars that don't run, to in car computers and cameras that are broke AND also .... many of their radios (not exactly safe).

OH. And last summer the stunning Supt of the CPD, aka: 'J-Fled', said there are an estimated 500,000 GANG MEMBERS & 'associates' in Chicago.

In fact the ONLY thing the ATF from Chicago does do (that makes the news) is harass ONE South Suburban Gun Store (on Daley's orders) that just happens to have a clientèle that is mostly black. [hmmm?? maybe he should deny blacks their RIGHT to buy legal guns?]

So, bang up job there Traver.
