Education funding crisis expected to grow beyond Wisconsin

Protesters unhappy about proposed budget cuts march at the State Capitol building on Wednesday in Madison, Wisconsin.

(CNN) -- This week's growing controversy about funding public education in Wisconsin is hardly an isolated incident, as 40 states are coping with budget shortfalls totaling $140 billion, which will threaten America's 14,000 school districts for the next five years, one analyst said Thursday.

Concerns about funding kindergarten through 12th-grade systems were evident this week in Denver when big education's stakeholders -- the nation's two largest teachers unions, a superintendents group, a school boards group and federal education officials -- met to discuss labor-management cooperation, one participant said.

The summit was sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education.

"What is becoming very clear is that state legislatures and governors are struggling with huge budget shortfalls," said Anne Bryant, executive director of the National School Boards Association, who attended the gathering.

Obama’s Trickle-Up Poverty is finally starting to hit the Protected class of Public Sector Employees.

What the hell did these people think 40+ years of Democrat vote-buying was going to cost them?

How much money would we save if we did away with public schools entirely?

Typical CNN...when they do try to cover a real story they get it wrong. The Wisconsin controversy is about removing collective bargaining privileges from all public employees (with a few exceptions), not just about “education funding”.

It will take a long time for poverty to trickle up to Wisconsin teachers. The president of the Milwaukee union makes well over $110k in salary and benefits.

I don’t know that, but I do know this: my husband and I shell out about $6000/yr for our three oldest to attend Catholic school (that’s tuition, books, lunches, and other fees), and I just watched my 8 y.o. 3rd grader do pre-algebra this afternoon. He’s reading at a near 5th grade level, and he’s the youngest in his class (he doesn’t turn 8.5 until next month). Just seeing those things alone make the price of tuition worth it.

Contrast that with the (public) high school my brother-in-law teaches in. High pregnancy rates, high failure rates (they tried to get him to pass students who were failing to make the numbers look good, which he refused to do), and he’s been physically attacked by students. Maybe throwing more money at it would help. </s>

It’s not just the money—how many kids would be better served academically, spiritually, and socially if we did away with public education? Or let’s call it what it really is—government education. Sorry, I have too much distrust in the ‘good’ that the government does to let them near my four children.

Those signs should read: “We *heart* using your children as props in our free benefits rally”

Look for the idiot in the White House to propose a federal takeover and funding of education nationwide to protect his union buddies.

It is amazing what can be done when the government is not involved. Your third-grader is a prime example. He actually gets to spend more time studying and less time being indoctrinated into multiculturalism. Wow!

I don’t blame all of the public education problems on unions. The breakdown of the American family is a big contributor to the problems you mentioned. Funny how everything leads back to democrats, isn’t it?

I received a minimum of 20 long division problems to be solved on my weekend. Calculators were not a factor. I did this because I wanted to do it right. (I didn’t enjoy the fact that Lost in Space was on and I might miss the plot!)

To: MinorityRepublican; All

the signs say it. Care about educators like they take care for your child. THEN WHY AREN’T THEY IN CLASS TEACHING THEM? Do this not during the school year. Yeah right it is about the children.

What “crisis”??? We’re talking about a mere 7% cut in pensions and benefits - NOT salaries. In any business, the CEO or Board would simply order a 10% pay cut or whatever. But in the Communistic system our Sheeple have accepted over the past 40 years, it isn’t quite that simple.

Most heads of teacher's unions are union people who have never been teachers.

This is all about unions...the teachers are useful idiots, IMO.

This Wisc. protest is all about the democrates keeping the cash flow into their coffers from the unions...who donate generously to their agendas and candidates. That’s why Obamas thugs are there creating the chaos...expect violence as this thing esculates.

Addditionally the Commies will be coming out in droves...the green people and all the other “professional” groupies will get on board. IMO Obama is loving this as it takes the focus off what he’s doing.

Chaos in the states to be expected...and just wait til welfare people have to take a cut...they’ll be out in droves.

This is going to get messy no matter what brush one uses.

His daddy is an engineer, so maybe the brains come naturally to him :) Although he gets the spelling (a 99 average right now) and reading skills from Mom. This school pushes the basics from K-2 and then from 3-6 (the highest grade level before they move to the junior high), they push them pretty hard academically.

My husband was a poor student (public schools) not because he was stupid (he actually averaged close to 4.0 in his engineering courses) but because he was not challenged. The reason we chose the school we did was their high academic standards—dh insisted on it. Not to mention the mix of discipline and a loving Christian environment where they are taught to serve something greater than themselves.

BTW, the most popular extracurricular (non-sport) activity at the school is the Battle of the Books, which is open to the 4-6 grade levels. Almost 1/2 of the students in those grades participate (our 6th grade daughter is in her 3rd year of it), and they have 11 teams. They place high in the state competitions—in the top five every year.

For sure. But it might be an Executive Order.
