I don’t know that, but I do know this: my husband and I shell out about $6000/yr for our three oldest to attend Catholic school (that’s tuition, books, lunches, and other fees), and I just watched my 8 y.o. 3rd grader do pre-algebra this afternoon. He’s reading at a near 5th grade level, and he’s the youngest in his class (he doesn’t turn 8.5 until next month). Just seeing those things alone make the price of tuition worth it.

Contrast that with the (public) high school my brother-in-law teaches in. High pregnancy rates, high failure rates (they tried to get him to pass students who were failing to make the numbers look good, which he refused to do), and he’s been physically attacked by students. Maybe throwing more money at it would help. </s>

It’s not just the money—how many kids would be better served academically, spiritually, and socially if we did away with public education? Or let’s call it what it really is—government education. Sorry, I have too much distrust in the ‘good’ that the government does to let them near my four children.

It is amazing what can be done when the government is not involved. Your third-grader is a prime example. He actually gets to spend more time studying and less time being indoctrinated into multiculturalism. Wow!

I don’t blame all of the public education problems on unions. The breakdown of the American family is a big contributor to the problems you mentioned. Funny how everything leads back to democrats, isn’t it?

The English refer to “state schools,””Public schools, being of course elite private schools. Congressmen do not send their kids to state schools, but to private schools.

I'd like to hear the Repubs bring this up- How much better private schools are versus public. How much are public school teachers paid? How much for private school teachers? What kind of benefits do public school teachers get-dollar amounts, pensions, exc.. vs. private school instructors? What are the dollar amounts in the budget?

The Pubs need to give details and remind people of how much these people already get. And there's no money.

I didn't know they were paid so well. I've always heard about "the poor underpaid-overworked teachers".

Ha-go figure.

my sister retired as a teacher in her middle 50's from NYS....all I know is she can vacation in Florida for the winter, and she carries her husband on her health insurance for free......

she's a math teacher and I'd love to have her show me the formula on how her pension/benefits for all her fellow state retirees is sustainable, let alone moral or ethical.

I lived in a time when we all learned reading, writing, and arithmetic, as well we learned about the history, the correct history of our nation, and we learned enough about our Constitution, and the reasoning behind it to understand, and know why our country was so great. Education back then instilled pride.

During the time I was in school the Long Beach, California Unified School District was rated #1 in the Nation.

The Left is a minority of self centered, power hungry elitists void of the ability to comprehend self government yet they have managed to dissassemble over many years that which we all had so much pride.

We must dissassemble the Leftist’ power, and soon.

And may God bless you for that.
