BenKenobi,
Some Freepers might be intersted in these two brief accounts below. Not at all unLike today, “the left” back then and Forrest’s enemy, “the Yankee Command”, largely blew Ft. Pillow into a web of lies to “propagandize” and help their cause at the beginning of the war. Many a dollar was raised and many a recruit recruited based upon reports from Ft. Pillow in New York Newspapers.
Like all wars, beginning with the Revoloutionary War, that the U.S. has EVER been involved in “the left” has ALWAYS opposed them and done everything they could to oppose them. One wonders whether or not “the left” would have fought on the beaches of Long Island had the Nazi’s landed there. Doubtless the N.Y. Times Exec’s would immediately flee to the West Coast in such an event to commence their criticism of “the war”.
Destruction and Reconstruction: Personal Experiences of the Late War; Richard Taylor, Lieutenant-General in the Confederate Army. New York: D. Appleton and Company, 549 and 551 Broadway,1879, pp.200
I doubt if any commander since the days of lion-hearted Richard has killed as many enemies with his own hand as Forrest. His word of command as he led the charge was unique: “Forward, men, and mix with ‘em!” But, while cutting down many a foe with long-reaching, nervous arm, his keen eye watched the whole fight and guided him to the weak spot. Yet he was a tender-hearted, kindly man. The accusations of his enemies that he murdered prisoners at Fort Pillow and elsewhere are absolutely false. The prisoners captured on his expedition into Tennessee, of which I have just written, were negroes, and he carefully looked after their wants himself, though in rapid movement and fighting much of the time. These negroes told me of Mass Forrest’s kindness to them.
“Was There a Massacre at Ft. Pillow?” John L. Jordan, Tennessee History Quarterly VI (June 1947), pp 99-133:
“...burial details were composed of Union troops under Union officers, a fact which clears Forrest’s men of the charges that they buried Negro wounded alive...Union casualties may have amounted to less two hundred killed, wounded, and missing.”
Haley’s NON conservative stance on immigration and Mexico has always been the same...he hasn’t changed....
I’m all for business, so don’t try that switch. Honest, patriotic business would be nice for a change.
One thing that never changes....FOLLOW THE MONEY.
BTW
Please phone your U.S. Reprentative now. Voting on key immigration amendments will start as early as noon.
Click here for your Phone Action Note with phone number, talking points and background info.
Staffers have arrived in their offices at the U.S. House of Representatives and are ready for your calls.
* 2 AMENDMENTS WOULD FURTHER GUT ENFORCEMENT
* 1 AMENDMENT WOULD GET THE FEDS OFF ARIZONA’S BACK (a good one)
* AND 1 AMENDMENT WOULD SUSPEND THE VISA LOTTERY!!!!!
These are real votes on a big spending bill, and they will be happening fast — although some votes may not be until this evening or even Thursday morning. Right now, it is just important that you phone as soon as you see this email.
I will be emailing you updates through the day. You can also keep up with the action by looking at our home page regularly at: www.NumbersUSA.com.
The first of you to call will probably find that staffers don’t even know these immigration amendments are being considered today. They were just approved for votes last night.
So, it is extremely important that you call your U.S. Representative to tell him/her that constituents know about the amendments and will be watching closely to see how he/she votes.
“One wonders whether or not the left would have fought on the beaches of Long Island had the Nazis landed there.”
Or at Penobscot Bay, one would presume?
Good grief. So what if he won’t denounce it? I’m a yankee and I couldn’t care less.
I don’t plan to denounce it either. Just thought I’d let everyone know.
Wow, evidently Barbour has somehow been tainted with the Original Sin of Jim Crow, and can only be redeemed by publicly condemning anything that can even remotely be imagined as racist and by groveling for forgiveness at the feet of self-appointed “Civil Rights leaders”. There seems to be at a story at least every other week that tries to paint Barbour as a segregationist bigot, when I don’t think he has ever said or done anything particularly racist in his career.
It’s strange - there are plenty of other southern polticians, including nationally prominent conservatives with Presidential aspirations, who never receive this kind of treatment from the media. There could be any number of reasons, but I suspect it’s because Barbour refuses to play the game.
good for him....neither will I
and freepers....interlopers...who dont like it can just go find another cause
we simply have a better class of blacks and unlike pc folks here live in a state where racial distinction is not just on tv commercials but a large fact of everyday life
Forrest is a hero to many folks down here....if the ignorant or easily offended dont like it then tuff
they can mind their own business...wherever they may live(?)
that would apply to snap judgments on Bedford Forrest as well and espe ially his Ft Pillow and Reconstruction resistance efforts...in context....but why read up...preening and bigot calling is so more fulfilling for the vapid and weak
I’m glad that I looked at Robbin’s replies before replying to him/her myself. You saved me the trouble, and I thank you. ;o)
BTW, just for Robbin’s edification, the Mississippi state flag is embedded with the confederate flag, and 40% of the blacks in the state voted to keep it.
“we simply have a better class of blacks and unlike pc folks here live in a state where racial distinction is not just on tv commercials but a large fact of everyday life”
I agree with you that we have a better class of blacks...they are homeowners, business owners, professionals...for the most part not ghetto, as they appear to be in the big cities. Many of them haven’t bought into the “government is the solution” rationale. Racial distinction is a fact of life everywhere, but it doesn’t seem to hamper those in my neck of the woods.
Mississippi bump, and I thank you very kindly, sir! ;o)
im on a droid...bad typing
Forrests portrait hangs in my foyer along with centuries old family pieces and my Bully is named Bedford...hence...i think anyone here gets the picture
and his starless(1) battle flag...so they would know it was him and tremble...hangs from my portico when im in the mood
along with old glory.... cleburnes.....polks....bonnie blue and ms state flag
“This whole thing seems like a media/NAACP stunt to produce the desired headline...”
That is EXACTLY what it is.
Bump you! ;o)
Thanks kidd......:)
Good for Haley.
