Analysis: Mexico risks losing large areas to drug gangs

Mexico is struggling to avert a collapse of law and order along its northern border in a region that generates a quarter of its economic output, with two states already facing the threat of criminal anarchy.

Even after four years of dramatic military sweeps, drug cartels in Chihuahua and Tamaulipas are extending their control over large areas and the state governments seem powerless to stop them.

Mass jail breaks, abandoned police stations, relentless killings and gangs openly running criminal rackets such as gasoline stolen from pipelines are the new reality in regions once at the forefront of Mexico's efforts to modernize and prosper under the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Gunmen killed as many as 18 people near Tamaulipas' state capital Ciudad Victoria on Sunday night, attacking a passenger bus and shooting up government buildings, although no word of the violence appeared in local newspapers and TV stations, which are too afraid to report or are paid off by the cartels.

Police found the severed head of a two-month-old baby dumped in the town of Delicias in Chihuahua earlier this month in one of the cruelest revenge attacks to scar the state.

"The criminals are hollowing out police and local governments' capacity to uphold the law," said Kevin Casas-Zamora, an analyst at the Brookings Institution in Washington and a former vice president of Costa Rica. "There is an explosion of robbery, extortion and kidnapping."

Violence is well away from the white beaches that draw millions of tourists, but

“Mexico Risks losing control of large areas to drug gangs?

Exactly! Many towns are ghost towns, with the residents hiding in the US along with the cartel thugs.

Every day we hear of another law enforcement person in Mexico being murdered. Many areas are controlled by the cartels, and many of the citizens LIKE it that way.

Some examples, just within the last few days.

Drug gangs my ass. Its pure anarchy with local warlords playing king of the mountain.

The situation in Mexico is steadily deteriorating, little bammy and Janet Nappy are blaming America while the native Mexicans are looking to the north.

Our government damn well better have the detention camps ready near the Mexican border because two more years of this crap and northern Mexico will evacuate

To here.

u.S. Citizens are NOT going to put up with the lawlessness of that population and it will become common to shoot them when the gangs come on the Citizen’s property. Our own “government” will come down on the American Citizens that defend themselves which will encourage the Mexican gangs to institute full-scale militaristic operations throughout the border states.

The inept feds will be totally outclassed and do incredibly stupid things like “ban guns.”

Yea, that worked so well in Mexico, right?

It will be at least two more years before we can have ANY expectation of a intelligent, grownup response to the Mexican war. By then, too late for Mexico, only FULL scale military operations from the u.S and perhaps some token assistance from other countries combined with the total upheaval and displacement of the Mexican population will have a snowballs chance of resolving the Mexican collapse.

Any predictions on the odds of the u.S. actually saving Mexico?

The whole south of the border thing hasn’t worked out like visionaries hoped it would, so now the plan is to give the refugees huge chunks of the US.

Three El Paso, TX car lots were found to be "fronts" for cartels. El Pasoans can now buy their wheels at car-tel dealerships. Pathetic.

Meanwhile, J-Nap scolds us not to misunderstand border security management.
