Furious that one of his staff had stolen hundreds of pounds from his business, Simon Cremer hung a sign saying thief around the mans neck and frogmarched him to a police station.
But while the employee, Mark Gilbert, was let off with a police caution, Mr Cremer spent three months facing a charge of false imprisonment until the case was dropped.
Now, in a further blow, the businessman has paid his former employee £5,000 compensation and covered his £6,000 legal fees in an out-of-court settlement to avoid a hugely expensive civil case for the humiliation he suffered.
Together with his own £2,000 lawyers bill, the total comes to £13,000.
Yesterday his local MP branded the situation offensive, while business leaders said justice had been turned upside down.

So just remember -- don't take the law into your own hands: you take 'em to court!
The Cardboard Letter.
England has been nucking futz for a long time now.
I think in USA he would be getting donations to cover the bill
In once-Great Britain, many things seem to be “upside-down” these days.
Why doesn’t everyone in the UK just kill themselves and get it over with! These people are the biggest dopes on the planet! I meant the United Arab Emirate of England!
“In once-Great Britain, many things seem to be upside-down these days.” Perhaps the Brits should be playing this song now:
“Listen to me and you shall hear, news hath not been this thousand year:
Since Herod, Caesar, and many more, you never heard the like before.
Holy-dayes are despis’d, new fashions are devis’d.
Old Christmas is kicked out of Tow
Yet let’s be content, and the times lament, you see the world turn’d upside down.”
Legend has it that this tune was played when Cornwallis surrendered to Washington in 1781. They thought there world topsy turvy then, what would old Cornwallis think of his home land now??
Next time, just kill him and feed him to a tree chipper. Above all, don’t brag about it at the pub.
we can’t have people taking work away from govt police officers...crime is good - it generates income for govt workers
Great Britain now minus the great. Just an island of fools anymore!
That’s why only stupid people in the UK ever report a crime.
And this guy was stupid!
Why didn’t he just phone the police?
Exactly.
Also trust the Daily Mail to be selective in reporting on this story. The Daily Telegraph has a few more interesting details:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/law-and-order/7904324/Thief-paraded-down-street-sues-boss.html
They beat him, tied him up, threatened him with ‘various tools’. Bundled him into the back of a van and then paraded him through the streets. He was also left with visible injuries (black eye, rope burns)
Im surprised people on here are apparently supporting these thugs. Yes he may have stolen money but the correct thing to have done would have been to call the police. There’s no place for vigilante ‘justice’ in civilised society.
