The group of anonymous "hacktivists" that made headlines for online cyberattacks in December just released a bombshell online: a decrypted version of the same cyberworm that crippled Iran's nuclear power program.
The ones and zeroes that make up the code called the Stuxnet worm -- described as the most sophisticated cyberweapon ever created -- were reportedly found when the faceless group hacked into the computers of HBGary, a U.S. security company that the anonymous collective viewed as an enemy. And the security experts FoxNews.com spoke with said the leaked code was serious cause for concern.
"There is the real potential that others will build on what is being released," Michael Gregg, chief operating officer of cybersecurity firm Superior Solutions, told FoxNews.com. Gregg was quick to clarify that the group hasn't released the Stuxnet worm itself, but rather a decrypted version of it HBGary had been studying -- which could act almost like a building block for cybercrooks.

It may serve as the basis for a new "rootkit" for new attacks or provide Iran with the necessary insight to resume their nuclear program after clearing the worm from their equipment. May the fools who released this spends months barfing from radiation poisoning and rotting flesh.

I thought Stuxnet was a targeted worm that would attack only specific types of industrial controllers and computers......

Note to self:
Do not use cybersecurity firm Superior Solutions which is incapable of protecting their own data.

These hackers do deserve severe penalties, even death, if their hack results in deaths.

The electric chair for the ones who created and released it or those who released it to the public?

I am not very computer literate. Is the implication of the story that these hackers have alerted the Iranians to how to foil a virus that was messing up their nuclear computers? Thus they will now be able to go back to producing nuclear material?
To: Sawdring
Both.
You have to discourage this sort of thing.

Stuxnet attacked Iran. I'm all for it and applaud the programmers for releasing it. It will allow US companies to harden against some like attack in the future.
That's the way it's always been done, kiddies.

There are only 10 kinds of people in this world, those who understand binary and those who don't.
What was released was the decompiled structure of the worm in binary. It is of no use to anyone. Those of us who would understand the structure and may have the capability to spend the time to manipulate the code to undertake a different attack were already well aware of where to find the binary code for Stuxnet. It has been available. Move along folks, there is nothing to see here - your AOL and Netscape aren't going to be compromised.

I know the goat rope all too well. I've had to reverse engineer interfaces from uncooperative vendors. There's nothing quite as satisfying as raising a middle digit to a smug vendor and watching them spit and sputter when you succeed in spite of them.

InfoWorld just put out a short article on Anonymous vs HB Gary. It appears the folks who engaged HB Gary to cobble up a disinformation campaign are walking away from HB Gary. Clearly not impressed with their level of competence in protecting what should have been very carefully guarded information. The employees of HB Gary may wish to omit that reference from their resume.
