Twelve for '12: A Dozen Republicans Who Could Be the Next President - Jim DeMint

With the GOP's presidential primary fight fast approaching, TIME takes a look at the prospective contenders to take on Barack Obama

Age: 59

Last held public office: U.S. Senator for South Carolina, 2005-Present

Tea Party candidates in the 2010 midterms had no greater champion than DeMint, who bucked his party's establishment to endorse nurture, and fund candidates like Rand Paul in Kentucky and Marco Rubio in Florida. He's been a leader of Tea Party legislative initiatives like the push to ban earmarks and would be one of the most socially conservative contenders in the 2012 field, opposing abortion even in cases of rape and incest. And as a Senator from South Carolina, DeMint is already well-established in one of the nation's first primary states.

Outside of the party's conservative base, DeMint lacks the name recognition and pizzazz of some other prospective contenders. Viability in the general election has historically been more important to Republican primary voters than ideological purity. (They swallowed years of resentment and nominated John McCain in 2008 in hopes of holding onto the White House in a Democratic year.) DeMint may not appeal to those simply looking for the candidate with the best chance to win wide appeal and oust Obama. (See video of DeMint, considered the spiritual leader of the Tea Party.)

Representative quote: "Tea party Republicans were elected to go to Washington and save the country — not be co-opted by the club. So put on your boxing gloves. The fight begins today."

Romney and Huckabee = Definitely NO!

I’d take Allen West if he were running.

What about this Scott Walker guy in Wisconsin? He looks like he’s everything Chris Christie thought he could be. With the added benefit of a NRA “A” rating.

Col. Allen West is a future POTUS.

Electrifying speech at CPAC.

Link to West's cpac speech: here.

Based on depth of understanding and ability to articulate the Founders' principles as well as the history and dangers of the opposing ideology which threatens America, Allen West stands taller than most.

Fast forward to the general election debates. Either he or Cain could demolish the counterfeit ideas of Obama and enlighten the citizenry at the same time.

Sadly, there are not many potential candidates who have the depth of understanding and/or the tenacity to accomplish that feat.

Just a question. What would you say is his most outstanding thing he has done? [I’d like to see the answer of all candidates on this]

Lately? I’ll list saving Honduras from a fate with a communist thug dictator who was supported by Obama and Hugo Chavez. His efforts to help kill the Obama Dream Act amnesty plan. And ending Charlie Crists career.

I was around for Reagan and Palin is Reagan in High Heels! She is better looking, but Reagan was not in his prime.

Palin is quicker in getting her words out than any politician in the last 50 years, this is a sign she says what she believes! Finally, someone who tells the Truth!

Some people seems to think a woman can’t run this country, that’s another reason why she needs to be the first woman President!

She would do a lot to hurt the men having sex with men lifestyle, Normal would be back in again! That’s probably the biggest reason that the anti Palin freepers keeping spurring out all the same negatives Reagan lived with, yes, our token liberal democrat Trolls and with their sick lifestyle!
