If lawmakers pursue a cuts-only budget to solve the state's $26.6 billion deficit, they could eliminate class-size reduction, require that kindergarten students be 5 years old at enrollment and hike university tuition by another 7 to 10 percent, according to a new review by the nonpartisan Legislative Analyst's Office.
There's also a stark option for state workers: reduce pay by an additional 9.24 percent (equal to two furlough days) and reduce state contributions to employee health care by 30 percent.
The Feb. 10 letter responds to Sen. Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, who asked the Analyst's Office what the Legislature could do if voters or lawmakers reject tax revenues proposed by Gov. Jerry Brown. The LAO offered $13.5 billion in alternatives, presuming under Leno's request that the ballot taxes did not succeed and other revenue ideas like eliminating enterprise zones would fail.

Sounds good.
Tackle the pension and wages problem FIRST!
No offense, but should we be taking advice about the debt from California?
But you're gonna hafta learn to put aside your compassion for the illegal alien and his half dozen kids.
The NEW ballad of Jed Clampett
Come and listen to a story ‘bout a man named Jed
Poor oil entrepreneur barely kept his family fed
Then one day he was working for some food,
And up through the town come a bumbling clown
(Brown that is, take a toke, what a joke)
Well the first thing you know old Jed’s taxes are to much to bear,
Kin folk said Jed move away from there!
Said California is no place for you to be
So they loaded up the truck and they moved from Beverly
(gon back to the Hills they are, fishn holes, country and western stars)
Well now it’s time to say goodbye to Jed and all his kin
They would like to thank you folks for kindly dropping in
You’re all invited back again to their new locality
To have a heaping helping of their hospitality
(Redneck Hillbillies, is what the press call ‘em now,
Clingers of bibles and guns and to Obama no bow!
Nice folks Y’all come back now, ya hear?)
As much sense as eating tips from the 1st Lady.
IF THEY ARE HERE ILLEGALLY, IT IS CHEAPER TO DEPROT THAN TO SUPPORT. The state’s elected offices need to be first in line for meaningful cuts in pay and perks since they gave away our money for years to get themselves reelected. Now the CHICKENS ARE HOME! I have yet to hear a news service even mention CUTTING political pay and perks. SAD!
2) Roll back wages for all the legislative staff to 2002 levels.
3) Convert state employee health care programs to equal the same offerings of federal and state programs for the taxpayers - $2,500 deductible, limited prescription, etc.
4) Permit employees to organize and participate in their own retirement programs without state matching contribution beyond what would be paid to social security, but restrict all new hires to social security or a program equivalent to social security, including payroll deductions equal to social security contributions.
5) Eliminate ‘personal holidays’ and restrict employees to a total of 4 weeks per year in paid time off, counting state and federal holidays.
6) Refund half of the extra $7.5 billion to the taxpayers, apply other half to state debt.
CA has a virtual PK to 12 system now. Eliminating PK and requiring 5 year olds in K would really not be a bad move.
But..the elephant in the room painted with Mexican colors are the illegals and their anchors. They take more than their share of school funds. Would you be willing to sacrifice your children’s education to educate the Third World?
I didn’t see cutting aid or benefits to illegals anywhere on his list.
Without those on the list, this is nothing more than scare tactic propaganda designed in an attempt to generate “YES” votes by the leftistlature and the ignorant voters, aka - sheeple.
Nothing real or new here, same old leftist meme.
...The horror, the horror!
I'm confused - is there some other age children are supposed to be when they start kindergarten?
The quote above is an example of how half-truths tell big lies.
The above quote can only, in error, be taken as true IF when faced with a “cuts only budget” in Sacramento schools and school districts do not change any of their spending priorities and make no demands on salaries and benefits of their employees.
In other words, faced with budget cuts from Sacramento, if the spending priorities of the schools, school districts and their employees are concerned with other interests (their personal and institutional prerogatives), besides things like “class-size reductions” and age for eligibility to enter kindergarten, or holding tuition down, then yes, those things will face “cuts”. But it won't be entirely Sacramento's fault.
Not one line about money to illegal aliens.
