The U.S. State Department began sending Twitter messages in Farsi on Sunday in the hopes of reaching social media users in Iran.
On the Twitter account, USA darFarsi, the department told Iranians, "We want to join in your conversation."
The second and third tweets were more pointed. The State Department accused Iran's government of illegalizing dissent while praising Egyptian protesters for the same activities.
The U.S. then called on Iran "to allow people to enjoy same universal rights to peacefully assemble, demonstrate as in Cairo."

This State Dept? Hmm why am I suspect?
This is a dangerous game.
What will they Tweet after getting them out into the streets, and the massacre begins?
Never let a crisis go to waste.
“Dear Iranian protester-wannabes, You can trust us, we’re from the US State Department”
uh huh
Who needs Wikileaks when we have the AP?
Even if I believed this story, do we really want to see this kind of thing in print? Sheesh.
@Iran kill mullahs kthnxbye
” US starts Farsi Twitter “
Go ahead, say it 3 times fast.
So what’s “twitter” in Farsi?
Yes.
In 2009-10, during the “Green Revolution” to protest election fraud, Iranians used Twitter to great effect.
Since then, Twitter has become much harder to block and could potentially be a much more useful tool.
People from all over the world “dyed” their Twitter/Facebook/Myspace/whatever profile pictures green (added a green overlay) as an act of solidarity to let the Iranians know that they were being supported.
