Landrieu slams 'de facto moratorium' amid news of key driller's bankruptcy
By Andrew Restuccia - 02/12/11 09:35 AM ET
Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.) slammed what she called a de facto moratorium on drilling in the Gulf of Mexico late Saturday night amid news that a major shallow-water driller filed for bankruptcy.
Landrieu, an outspoken critic of the Obama administrations offshore drilling policies, blamed the Interior Departments excruciatingly slow release of oil and gas permits for the companys hard times.
How many more rigs have to leave and how many more businesses have to close before it realizes the havoc the de facto moratorium is wrecking on the Gulf Coast? When these businesses close, people lose good paying jobs, our communities erode and our unique culture disappears, Landrieu said in a statement.
The Obama administration imposed a moratorium on deepwater drilling in the Gulf of Mexico in the aftermath of last years massive oil spill. The moratorium has since been lifted, but Landrieu and other drill-state lawmakers say drillers are operating under a de facto moratorium because no deepwater drilling permits have been issued.
The Interior Department has issued a suite of new safety rules with which drillers must comply, a process that has resulted in frustrations in the industry.
But shallow-water drilling in the Gulf was exempt from the administrations moratorium and the Interior Department has issued 31 shallow-water permits since the oil spill.
Thats not enough, Landrieu said.
The most infuriating thing about this announcement is that the shallow water industry was not placed under the president's moratorium, she said. Despite this, [Interiors] new rules and regulations make it very difficult to conduct business in the Gulf. It is time the administration ends this madness and gets the folks along the Gulf Coast back to work.
Living on sunshine, wind and unicorns who fart skittles for propulsion
She’s been much more effective simply because she and the President are in the same party.
Hint hint.
Thanks Libloather.
My thoughts exactly. The Landrieu name has been a fixture in Louisiana politics for at least ninetyleven years. So if she switches, I would also I would also look for several others in her family to switch, including her brother, the mayor of New Orleans.
Limbaugh said, That may be folks, that may be, the most expensive prostitute in the history of prostitution, and shes bragging about it. Mary Landrieu bragging about a $300 million payoff from Dingy Harry to get her vote on this healthcare scam on Saturday night.
If she's serious best she resign and let's get a Senator in there who can do the job.
Now Manchin can be dealt with by a group of coal miners with shovels I am sure ~ first time he tries visiting the mines.
I think that the long-term damage here is that business can’t commit to spending tens of billions of dollars over a decades based upon the whims of politicians. Even if O says “drill away” today, how do you know that he or the courts won’t change their minds next month? A year from now?
Actually, she was re-elected in 2008, so she won’t run again until 2014.
I think at a majority of Freepers know that the plan is to kill America buy killing the energy industry.
The real questions are:
What do we do about it??
How much longer do we wait for action to reverse this, is taken???
How long do we have until it is TOO LATE???
You're one of them!!
We not gonna be able to forget next time!
While I agree she has been on the right side of this issue from the beginning one has to question her party. I wonder if she was as concerned about the “Delta Smelt protection” in California and the impact that had on California farmers.
The left has adopted the anti-capitalism plank of the radical environmentalists. They pay back their political donors and base with government subsidies to “green jobs” and alternative energies which don’t work but line their pockets quite nicely.
Let’s ask Mary to tour the damage in California and see if catches the irony of the same type of policy implemented in another state and industry.
That’s the plan, Mary.
No coal either. No Nat gas. 5$ at the pump
If she became a Republican, she'd probably have a job until they carried her out of the office.
Democrats will pass any regulations to hamstring everyone else but God forbid somebody ***** with their honey-pot.
Straight hypocritical in one sense and completely blind and deaf that giving power to the government to run over other’s interests, puts your interests on the hook as well.
The Republicans need to be hitting Barry over the head with this 24/7.
maybe some dems are realizing what is happening and they want no part of it all?
Or are they just distancing themselves from zero to save their soiled butts?
