Conservative commentator Ann Coulter brought today's audience at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington to its feet in applause after urging the Republican party to include gays - perhaps getting the last word on the place gays have in the conservative movement after a tussle that pitted social conservatives against libertarians at this year's conference.
"The left is trying to co-opt gays," she said. "They should be on our side."
The fight over the Republican party's acceptance of gay conservatives and gay rights came to a head at CPAC, after organizers invited the gay conservative group GOProud to be an official participant. Some social conservative groups protested the convention as a result, but gay conservatives and their allies this week declared victory, observing that they were well-received at the event.

And I agree with you.
Shame, shame Ann. We thought you were conservative.
Don’t you know if you support wrong you are partaking of that sin?
If we are to survive as a country we must turns away from evil.
Doesn't seem like there are any folks out there that missed his reasoning.
Well, it does appear there is a chasm between socons and (l)ibertarians in the party...it's also a geographical gap statistically.
A "southern conservative" is around 80% likely to also be a social conservative.
A "western/mountain-conservative" is far more likely to be (l)ibertarian and open to gays in the party.
Palin is far more the later.
She’s entitled to her opinion - mine differs.
I wonder if CPAC could do some last minute scheduling changes. Perhaps they could bus in a few hundred illegal aliens to help round out the tent.
Ann Coulter is finished.
I don’t know what NoLibZone’s reasoning may be, but “gay rights” is a direct assault on religious liberty.
When I am forced to hire, promote, or provide shelter for people I regard as morally perverse (and a perverting, corrupting influence) against my solidly, deeply, based religious principles, then, there is no religious freedom in America anymore.
Why someone as sharp as Anne can’t realize that, I don’t know except that:
A) She’s a lawyer
B) She’s from NYC.
I am willing to be tolerant to what two people do in their home behind closed doors. When they form a group and start pushing their agenda on me and first graders - game over.
The others on this thread get that homosexuality is not something conservatives embrace.
So I’ll leave it simple for you.
I guess it’s OK to destroy the traditional family as long as you call yourself a conservative republican.
I absolutely agree the "gay rights" agenda is both anti-religious and anti-liberty.
Exactly right. This is what the entire issue is really about: religious freedom.
The Poo Party
Who's telling them not to? What we're saying is keep your leftist identity groups out of CPAC.
Have you ever seen what GOProuds Federal Legislative agenda is?
GOProud Federal Legislative Agenda
1 TAX REFORM - We support replacing the current tax code with the Fair Tax. Until then, we support death tax repeal; domestic partner tax equity; cuts in the capital gains and corporate tax rates to jump start our economy and create jobs; a fairer, flatter and substantially simpler tax code.
2 HEALTHCARE REFORM Free market healthcare reform. Allow for the purchase of insurance across state lines expanding access to domestic partner benefits; emphasizing individual ownership of healthcare insurance such a shift would prevent discriminatory practices by an employer or the government.
3 SOCIAL SECURITY REFORM - The only way to permanent solvency in the Social Security system is through the creation of inheritable personal savings accounts. Personal savings accounts would give gay and lesbian couples the same opportunity to leave their accounts to their spouses as their straight counterparts.
6 FIGHTING GLOBAL EXTREMISTS Standing strong against radical regimes that refuse to recognize the basic human rights of gays and lesbians, women and religious minorities.
7 DEFENDING OUR CONSTITUTION Opposing any anti-gay federal marriage amendment. Marriage should be a question for the states. (where they win in the courts) A federal constitutional amendment on marriage would be an unprecedented federal power grab from the states.
8 ENCOURAGING COMMUNITY ENTREPRENEURSHIP Package of free market reforms to encourage and support small businesses and entrepreneurship. Such reforms would create jobs for all Americans including gay Americans.
And lest you be fooled by the inclusions: Christopher Barron, GOProud Chairman of the Board: "We are a gay organization, we only work on gay issues, we have never claimed otherwise. My God people." Aug 4, 2010; 4:04pm
The Republicans do everything in their power to alienate me, but I usually vote for them anyway while holding my nose.
Last election was different. I’m hoping the next one is too.
