Here's an announcement to its customers that I'm told came directly from Sysco Foods.
ALL OF OUR GROWERS HAVE INVOKED THE ACT OF GOD CLAUSE ON OUR CONTRACTS (Force majuere) DUE TO THE FOLLOWING RELEASE. WE WILL BE CONTACTING YOU PERSONALLY TO REVIEW HOW THIS WILL AFFECT OUR CONTRACTED ITEMS WITH YOU GOING FORWARD.
THE DEVASTATING FREEZE IN MEXICO IS WORST FREEZE IN OVER 50 YEARS...
THE EXTREME FREEZING TEMPERATURES HIT A VERY BROAD SECTION OF MAJOR GROWING REGIONS IN MEXICO, FROM HERMOSILLO IN THE NORTH ALL THE WAY SOUTH TO LOS MOCHIS AND EVEN SOUTH OF CULIACAN. THE EARLY REPORTS ARE STILL COMING IN BUT MOST ARE SHOWING LOSSES OF CROPS IN THE RANGE OF 80 TO 100%.
EVEN SHADE HOUSE PRODUCT WAS HIT BY THE EXTREMELY COLD TEMPS. IT WILL TAKE 7-10 DAYS TO HAVE A CLEARER PICTURE FROM GROWERS AND FIELD SUPERVISORS, BUT THESE GROWING REGIONS HAVEN'T HAD COLD LIKE THIS IN OVER A HALF CENTURY.
THIS TIME OF YEAR, MEXICO SUPPLIES A SIGNIFICANT PERCENT OF NORTH AMERICA'S ROW CROP VEGETABLES SUCH AS: GREEN BEANS, EGGPLANT, CUCUMBERS, SQUASH, PEPPERS, ASPARAGUS, AND ROUND AND ROMA TOMATOES.
FLORIDA NORMALLY IS A MAJOR SUPPLIER FOR THESE ITEMS AS WELL BUT THEY HAVE ALREADY BEEN STRUCK WITH SEVERE FREEZE DAMAGE IN DECEMBER AND JANUARY AND UP UNTIL NOW HAVE HAD TO PURCHASE PRODUCT OUT OF MEXICO TO FILL THEIR COMMITMENTS, THAT IS NO LONGER AND OPTION.
WITH THE SERIES OF WEATHER DISASTERS THAT HAS OCCURRED IN BOTH OF THESE MAJOR GROWING AREAS WE WILL EXPERIENCE IMMEDIATE VOLATILE PRICES, EXPECTED LIMITED AVAILABILITY, AND MEDIOCRE QUALITY AT BEST.
THIS WILL NOT ONLY HAVE AN IMMEDIATE IMPACT ON SUPPLIES, BUT BECAUSE OF VERY STRONG BLOSSOM DROPS, THIS WILL ALSO IMPACT SUPPLIES 30 60 DAYS FROM NOW...

Lets make more fuel out of corn to give those poor farmers heat instead of food.
Quick, someone find a way to blame this crop failure on the US ethanol subsidy!
Thanks Red_Devil 232.
Do either of you really think Errant typed that?
Really?
It requires special care and timely trimming and I’m sure it has to be indoors to accomplish it. It did look like a little tree. It had wrinkly bark on the “trunk.” In nature it is strictly an annual.
Thanks! That PDF you linked to appears to be the orignal source.
I agree. Grow your own folks.
Happy to help!
How about some live traps. Feed the pigs caught till the season arrives, and... MMM MMM MMM. or in the words of any environmentalist, a renewable resource, the javelina farm.
Unless of course you live in AZ...
http://www.azgfd.gov/w_c/urban_javelina.shtml
A. A person commits unlawful feeding of wildlife by intentionally, knowingly or recklessly feeding, attracting or otherwise enticing wildlife into an area, except for:
1. Persons lawfully taking or holding wildlife pursuant to title 17 or pursuant to rules or orders of the Arizona game and fish commission.
2. Public employees or authorized agents acting within the scope of their authority for public safety or for wildlife management purposes.
3. Normal agricultural or livestock operational practices.
4. Tree squirrels or birds.
B. This section applies in a county with a population of more than two hundred eighty thousand persons.
C. Unlawful feeding of wildlife is a petty offense.
Oh, sorry, I see you are next door. What am I bet the New Mexico game fish and parks, has the same rules regarding feeding javelina?
Now I don’t care what people say, that there is funny.
I will have to send you photos my new hydro grow shed
You could share them with the gardening folks via http://www.freerepublic.com/~reddevil232/
who runs the ping list for the weekly gardening thread.
Ping to the Weekly Gardening Ping List.
I hope all of you will stop by.
This is typically a low volume ping list. Once a week for the thread and every once in a while for other FR threads posted that might be of interest.
If you would like to be added to or removed from the list please let me know by FreepMail or by posting to me.

Oooops forgot to ping you on the previous. That would be just before this one.
” What am I bet the New Mexico game fish and parks, has the same rules regarding feeding javelina? “
If it’s a $2000 fine, first offense, them we have pretty much the same rules...
I happen to know this, because one of my neighbors found out the hard way (she thought they were ‘cute’) a few years back, and she still talks about the experience any chance she gets... ;)
2,000 bucks. That is an expensive lesson. I have a slightly different opinion, but...
States will do what their people demand...
...and that isn’t always in the best interest of “the people”.
No wonder she is still talking about it. Are you rural or urban. If in town, I can understand, but rural... that ought to be up to the land owner.
” Are you rural or urban. “
It’s a 30 mile drive to the nearest WalMart - ya can’t get much more rural than that... ;)

That being the case, how on earth did your neighbor get caught doing what she was doing.
A snitch? Big mouth? Javelina on a leash? What.
This is a short term dissaster. All of these can be grown in the U.S. easily. (not this time of year except in a greenhouse). The sky is not yet falling.... But it may be locally in Mexico for a while, many of the residents of Mexico already have a difficult time feeding their families. (not weather related).
Yesterday I planted 28 fruit trees in the family orchard and plan a larger than normal garden. Am I paranoid? No, but preparing costs very little considering the possible cost for not.
A much more serious problem we are facing with food cost will be created by the HR2749/S.510/HR2751 FDA Food Take-over bill. The last breath of the Lame Duck Session passed this mess and Obozo signed it into law. THIS could increase the price of produce and other products by 50% this years.... Do a little homework on that sell out. Sellout? Yes, we were sold out for a little silver to Global Ag (you know that arm of the Globalist Consortium /sarcasm). That act was not an "act of God" but of Congress & Senate in Session.
” A snitch? Big mouth? “
Yep — it’s an old (dating back to the turn of the century) small town (I’m being generous - it’s a ‘wide spot on the road’ with a population of less than 200) and there are rivalries and feuds here that go back for decades...
It’s a fun place to live.... ;)
Thanks I am on the weekly gardening ping and I will post them when I have everything operational.
