So I went to a hobby shop and a pet store to get my props and at the dress rehearsal for the big scene with an empty bird cage in one hand and a big “dead” parrot in my other hand.Hilarious. Did many people 'get' it?

Yes, and it was really great because the line “Excuse me is this the return department” wasn’t particularly a “laugh line” in the song/scene, but when I held up the parrot and cage and asked about the return department there were several hearty laughs in the audience. You could tell that there were quite a few that caught the connection while the rest of the audience didn’t understand the significance.
