So I went to a hobby shop and a pet store to get my props and at the dress rehearsal for the big scene with an empty bird cage in one hand and a big “dead” parrot in my other hand.

Hilarious. Did many people 'get' it?

Yes, and it was really great because the line “Excuse me is this the return department” wasn’t particularly a “laugh line” in the song/scene, but when I held up the parrot and cage and asked about the return department there were several hearty laughs in the audience. You could tell that there were quite a few that caught the connection while the rest of the audience didn’t understand the significance.
